Then open up itunes once your done saving the songs to the cmputer and then go to file - add folder to library-

pick the folder you saved the songs too and this will add all the songs to the library.

then just sync and your all set

How do you really clean your computer and protect my computer from spys?

I saw that there was spy ware someone can use to monitor your emails, chat, and deleted files. I would like to keep my personal life private without someone ever being able to scan my computer and find private emails, chat or deleted files. If I could find some software to detect if some has installed such software on my computer that would be great, free if possible. I also would like to know the best software to use to clean your computer of all items for safety.

How do you really clean your computer and protect my computer from spys?
You can also take a look at SpyBot. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...

It can work well as a compliment to Ad-Aware.
Reply:A very good question . This is a very big problem nowadays and will even be a bigger problem in the future . But i can give you some good free software to keep your computer running safely .

1. Anti - Virus . A well known free anti virus is AVG Anti virus

can be found at the following link.

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F...

as for a antispyware program - use adware se personal found it this link

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Pers...

BUT most importantly of all is to keep your computer up to date with the latest security updates provided by microsoft every month. You can download these updates from the following link

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupd...

I would have to say updating is the most important thing . With an antispy and an antivirus you should be in good hands , but to keep your computer running at its best you have to clean it and the my favorite piece of software is a cleaning utitly called CCLEANER. found at the following link.

http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-21...

With these programs you should have a good running computer.
Reply:I am personally very satisfied with Lavasoft Ad-aware SE. Best of all, it's free. It eliminates all of the nasty stuff you acquire while surfing around the net. Look for it by name using any reputable search engine.
Reply:I run my computer exactly the way you want. The best thing to do to clean it up is to reformat it (serious). Then lock everything down, turn on firewalls, dont install plug-ins for your browser (hey flash is ok). You don't need antivirus and AdAware and those other gay programs. They are like viruses and eat just as much resources as a virus. I dont run any of them and have never had a virus. Always use your computer in a non-administrative user account, switching to admin-enabled when you need to install software. The limitations might be annoying at first but when everyone's computers around you have a virus and they are trying to get their antivirus programs working, you'll be happy you had those limitations.
Reply:Yahoo includes a pop-up blocker and Norton anti-spy. Use them frequently.

Do not open mail from someone you don't know.

If purchasing online, do not enter personal information and credit card information until you see the padlock on the bottom right of the screen, and https (instead of http) in the address box.

Get an anti-spyware, an antivirus and a firewall and your computer will be OK.
Reply:Install all the following:

Tune Up Utilities (Normally its a 30 Day Evaluation)

Crap Cleaner (Free)

Registry Smart (Normally a shareware but you need to register)

You may wish to visit "Naughty Sites" for possible crack apps...its up to you....

Ad Aware SE Personal (Free)

Of course do not forget to install also an anti virus software - you may try Kaspersky Personal Pro - it stops virus before it reaches your computer. Version 6.0 would be fine as it consumes little of your resources.

How can I connect both my computer and my playstation to my subwoofer and speakers at the same time?

I have a pair of speakers and a subwoofer. I can connect my computer and my playstation to them, but at seperate times.

How can I connect both my computer and my playstation to my subwoofer and speakers at the same time?
usually there are different types of inputs/output heads on subwoofers, normally if you look at the back and see what the output is, go buy a splitter. I know my speakers came with a computer to game console splitter
Reply:yeah a splitter or make one. if you ask this question at radioshack or fye music or walmart, im sure you'll get what you want. that is if youve got money to spend.

Otherwise i got a simple solution, if your subwoofer has 2 inports in the back, like a Left(white) and Right(Red), then just plug 1 cord from your sound card to the sub, and the other 1 from your ps2.

If you have 2 ports in the back that would be the easiest way, otherwise your stuck buying making a splitter.
Reply:get a splitter...or make one

How can I transfer a file from my main computer to my second desktop computer in my home?

I would like to learn how to transfer files from one computer to the other.

How can I transfer a file from my main computer to my second desktop computer in my home?
Get a USB Flash Drive. Copy from computer 1 to flash drive then from flash drive to computer 2.
Reply:Depending on the size of the file... you could simply email the file to yourself using a web based email like yahoo and go collect the attachment on the other computer..

This works great for files under 10mb

You could purchase a USB device.. a 1gig USB will hold PLENTY of information.. you just stick the usb device into the usb port and it's as if you have another harddrive.. then you simply drag and drop the file.. or copy and paste it.. and then take the usb device to the other computers usb port and pop it in.

If you have significantly more data to transfer.. you can use a DVD burner.. DVD's can hold 3.2gigs or more if you get double sided etc.. but I'm talking the average normal ones...

CD's hold from 650mb to 800 mb depending on the type you get. So a USB can hold more...

You can also purchase an External Harddrive.. they make these in all sizes.. so if you have big movies you may want to get an external 500gig harddrive. These can be used with USB or Firewire ports... firewire is a much faster transfer rate.

Good Luck
Reply:Networking or FireWire then use the "Files and Transfer Wizard".
Reply:Just get a USB jump or flash drive and transfer the file to that ... then take it home %26amp; download it on your PC at home.

Depending on how big the file is ... you can get all size jump /flash drives. They come as low as $10.

I'm not the most PC literate ... but doing this is a piece of cake.
Reply:Use the File Transfer Wizard. Here is a pdf file that has it all laid out for you:

http://www.cba.unl.edu/its/training/manu...
Reply:This can be done in a few different ways. The easiest by far being the use of a disk drive like CDs or a Flash drive, even a floppy disk(not recommended, however). Just right click and copy the files from the source computer and paste them onto the disk. Then insert the disk into the second computer, and copy or cut and paste the files onto the second computer. If you copy instead of cut, you'll have to delete the files off of the disk afterwards.
Reply:Either you need to have a LAN (Local Area Network) to which both are connected or a cross cable connecting the two comps. Other option is to use a thumb drive to copy the file from one and copyt it onto the other.
Reply:The most effective way would be to use a router (which you should have if you have DSL or cable internet). Once on the LAN you simply use the "Map Network Drive" utility located in the tool tab in "My Computer. I use a second computer as a file server with W2k to backup my other computers. I have an old P-III 500 with 512mb of RAM and 4 hard drive to backup files to. I use a KVM and do not even have a dedicated monitor\keyboard\mouse for it.

What does it take to get a search warrant to seize a computer?

What does it really take for police to seize a computer? I have someone claiming I have been harrassing them over the internet, but I really havent. One of my friends emailed this accuser and told the accuser to leave me alone. Do the police have the authority to seize my computer even though the accuser doesnt have proof of any harrassment from me besides the emails from my friend which were sent from a differant computer? I know the police would have to obtain a warrant first, but what evidence do they need to actually obtain a warrant?

What does it take to get a search warrant to seize a computer?
No they can't. I have only heard of computers being seized if a person is accused of a murder, stalking, or sexual abuse of a minor, or an tempt of it. Dont worry. Youre going to be okay, and keep your computer. Computer harrassment is not a serious crime, if it even is a crime. Take Care, and block this fool from contacting you. Problem solved!
Reply:Question is, what do you have to hide on your computer?
Reply:They just need just cause. They can find that if they wanted to anytime, anywhere.

Odds are unless child pornogrophy is involved or laundering money or death threats they would never touch your computer, Sounds like a highschool fight more than a matter for the law.
Reply:The police do need sufficient evidence to obtain a warrant, and they have to get it from the courts, just like an arrest warrant, or a warrant to search your property. If you have nothing to hide, then you can simply let them look at your computer. They aren't going to care if it's filled with a stash of porn sites, but obviously they'd check through them all to make sure that they aren't illegal in any way.

the police can't waltz into a court room and ask a judge for a warrant just because somebody has claimed that you've been harrassing them. The person who has claimed harrassment needs to provide evidence, such as a full transcript of the conversation before they can start doing stuff like that, and they'd probably end up seizing both computers to compare the data and prove it anyway, which would eliminate the possibility they just typed it up to look like an IM conversation had taken place.

How do I get the Desktop and toolbar to appear on my computer?

It has been a long time now. Some months ago i got viruses on my computer. The viruses made my desktop and toolbar disappear. After a couple of weeks I figured out how to use the Ctrl + Alt + Delete button to use my computer and open files. For now my computer is virus free. I would really like my desktop and toolbar back! Please someone help me!

How do I get the Desktop and toolbar to appear on my computer?
It sounds like you may have adware related problems. Try running the computer in safemode (as you're booting up, press F8 and select Safe Mode), which should restore your desktop and toolbar. Once in safemode, you can clean your computer. I recommend following the directions on the link below, as well as using a program called Hijack This which I have also linked to.

How to escape my computer from being traced over the internet ?

Hi Experts,

I have bought a computer and after some days i knew that it was a stolen computer ? Can any one tell me how can i escape my computer from being traced over the internet.

How to escape my computer from being traced over the internet ?
First thing, in the sense of your case the owner can't trace.

But in the general sense of meaning, yeah computers on internet could be done. Suppose u sent a mail from ur outlook to someone then can trace u back to ur location. For anonymity on internet u can use proxies. More details and illustration on proxies and there use could be found here

http://tech-hutblog.blogspot.com/2007/04...
Reply:They can't ;p don't worry.
Reply:theres no way to "trace it" unless the previous owner had gps software installed on it. I do not condone buying stolen items but theres really no way to tell unless someone sees the consumer code on it and reports it.
Reply:Don't hook it to the internet, or keep it turned off.

What is preventing my computer from starting?

I just bought a new motherboard and and Intel Pentium 4 Processor. (They are both compatible) The processor is 1.6 GHz. I installed them into the case of a pretty old computer, and used that old computer's power supply and fan. I plugged all of the needed cables into the right sockets on the motherboard. (The old fan's cord couldn't reach the System Fan connector, so I plugged it into the Power Fan connector. Is that a big deal?) When I pressed the button on the front of the computer, nothing. I unplugged the powercord from the back, and I heard this high-pitched squealing that took about 20-30 seconds to completely stop. Would the old power supply be the reason for this? Thanks.

What is preventing my computer from starting?
Sounds like you just fried your new processor chip! Stick to building sandwiches until you have a little more experience! Next time read the manual! Either the fan wasnt the correct one or you didnt apply heat sink compound! That hi pitched sound you heard was the processor goin into nuclear meltdown! If you think I am kiddin, take the fan off and you will see the center of the chip has completely blown away!
Reply:I think your computer is not working is because you istalled that thiong into an old computer case, and don't use that case get another one.
Reply:It sounds like the RAM is not compatible.
Reply:buy an other psu cuz p4 mobo need least 300 w power.

have you got if not then don't play with it coz i fuked a mobo by using low power psu with p4 mobo
Reply:was that power supply within specs for that mobo. i don't know if i would have connected the fan into the power fan either....

all i know is that CPU's aren't supposed to make "high pitched squealing "sounds.

i kind of wonder, did you happen to smell an acrid smell after you fired it up ? if so you may well have fried your mobo...........
Reply:Most likely yes! Intel Pentium 4 Processor power supply is different from the old AT style case. If you look at the actual old power supply plug it is much shorter that the one required on the motherboard. You probably need a newer style case and power supply to accomodate the new motherboard and Intel Pentium 4 Processor. You mentioned the he old fan's cord couldn't reach the System Fan connector, which indicates a possible mismatch on the case. ATX cases power supply are turned 45 degrees for this reason(by Design) It won't power because there isn't enough power for the CPU. when you go to purchase a new case tell them which Motherboard and CPU combo you have.
Reply:Old and New do not mix to well at times. I would suggest using an ATX psu and a ATX system case. They have to match in power. I wouldn't use the power supply any more til you get a better power supply and system case before the Da.m thing goes to hell.
Reply:You probably should have purchased a new case/power supply with the new mobo/cpu but that doesn't answer your question.

If this is a new install, and its never run before then perhaps you neglected to check your jumper settings. You may have to set your bios jumper to normal instead of clear. Sometimes motherboard come with the bios jumper set to clear and has to be set to normal to boot up. Check your motherboard manual.
Reply:i don't think you should connect the cpu fan to the power fan connector. try getting another fan (maybe the cable will be longer) or else, get an extension for that cpu fan, but it's possible that you busted your new cpu

check all your jumper settings...and also, consider getting a new power supply

How do you protect your eyes from harmful radiation when working on computer?

I heard about computer glasses (sometimes called computer screen glasses) but I'm not really sure whether it really works or to what extent they can protect my eyes. I've got to spend lots of time in front of the computer screen and sometimes my eyes can really get tired. Even taken I've got LCD at my workplace!

If you've got any info on this or any other eye protection devices, let me know! Thanks!

How do you protect your eyes from harmful radiation when working on computer?
Your eyes get tired because you have them focused on one field and they are constantly making micro-adjustments as you work. LCD monitors produce negligible levels of radiation; radiation is not what makes your eyes tired.
Reply:You should make short breaks while working on your computer and do certain eye exercises to relax your eyes after you finish your work. It will help your eyes relax.

Go to this website and subscribe to a free email newsletter:

http://www.refractiveeyedisorders.com/ry...

You will receive some tips every day on how to protect your eyes.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Reply:Most computer screed that use a CRT now have a "Screen" built into the front glass. LCD screens do not project a stream of electrons. There is no radiation from them.

In either case there is plenty of eye strain as a result of prolonged use. There are screens that you can clip over the front of the screen
Reply:hi friend

we should blink our eyes as many times as possible
Reply:There is no harmful radiation from the computer.

Your eyes can get tired on the computer for a number of reasons. You may have refractive errror and need glasses. You are likely not blinking enough while working and the eye may be drying out. You may be not taking enough breaks. You chair/desk/monitor/keyboard set up may not be ideal and causing back or neck problems that are manifesting in the eye.

See an eye doctor to check for refractive error and dry eye. You may need to use artificial tears two or three times a day. Look up from the computer frequently, take a 30-60 second "stand up and stretch" break every 20 minutes, try to break up your computer work with other non computer work. If your employer has an ergonomics person, have your workplace set up analysed.

See the link below for other computer use tips.
Reply:Never heard of this. Hmmm.....

I have an LCD screen, also.

So to multiply two numbers in computer code, you would write something like

Input x

Input y

Output=x*y

If you didn't know that x could be any number and y could be any number, you would have to write the multiplication tables for every number you could think of, and wait a long time for the computer to search the data for the exact two numbers you wanted to multiply.

That's a simple example, but the point is this: Algebra is the math that lets any letter substitute for a number -- any number. A different letter can mean any other number. You can input any number for x, any number for y, any number for z, and tell the computer what to do with those numbers, however complicated the math is.

If you don't know algebra, you can't figure out what the computer should do with the numbers you want to fool around with.

How do you transfer yahoo settings from a old to a new computer- Is it automatic when you log on?

I have a HP computer with only 256MB of SDRAM memory running Windows XP Home Edition. I am planning to buy a new computer with 1024MB of SDRAM memory running Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled. I use yahoo with a lot of favorites- will these automaticlly come up when I log on to my new computer? I use Internet Explorer7.

How do you transfer yahoo settings from a old to a new computer- Is it automatic when you log on?
The settings will remain the same, this data is stored at Yahoo.
Reply:your Yahoo profile will stay the same because your connecting to a public website but if you have any favorites stored on your old machine you might want to copy those over to the new one or they won't just show up.
Reply:Yahoo! is an interent-based application, which means all your "favorite" settings will stay intact, regardless of which computer you use, once you log in. I hope that helps!

What should you do if your computer becomes infected with a virus?

At school we're currently learning about Internet and viruses and a question that i need to answer is : What should you do if your computer becomes infected with a virus? Please state a brief response. Thanks!

What should you do if your computer becomes infected with a virus?
Hmm a simple answer to that question is:

There are many types of viruses. Some of them infect system files on the computer. Other types infect specific types of files, most comon: Executable files. Other Viruses infect startup files of windows.

There are two ways to fix this issue. If you install an antivirus, it can easily remove the virus from the computer infected, but sometimes, some viruses don't let you install it by producing errors on the antivirus setup.

If that occurs the best way to avoid any more trouble is to format the computer and re-install windows by learning from our mistakes and installing an antivirus RIGHT after the format.

Have fun , hope i helped:)
Reply:Run a complete scan with an anti virus software such as Avast Home Edition 4.7

or you can choose to format your PC and reinstall the Windows.

However, formatting and reinstalling should be your absolute last course of action.

Most times, you can fix the problem by running couple scans to be sure that everything becomes clean.

How do I get stuff from my iPod to a new computer?

I have a lot of irreplaceable pictures and songs on my iPod that were synced to an old computer. I've deactivated that computer and gotten some songs (the ones bought from iTunes) onto my new computer, but I've gotten none of the imported CD songs or pictures. Can an iPod be used as a flash drive, or do I have to find an alternative form of media transfer?

How do I get stuff from my iPod to a new computer?
First, you gotta download itunes, then connect your ipod to the computer, then they sync automatically.
Reply:itune blocks this function, you must utilize other tools to achieve that. There're couple of tools for transferring the files between ipod and computer depends on your demands, e.g transfer only songs/videos, transfer photos etc. You can have a look of this yahoo answer, same question as u.
Reply:Yeah, I think that you can download iTunes on your other computer. Then sync your iPod on it, and drag the media/picture from iTunes to your desktop. I just tried it, it works.

Gateway Computers used to have a program. You may want to check out their website and see if they still offer it. If you can't find any info on their website, you can try calling customer service. When I worked there, it wasn't a widely publized program . . . for obvious reasons.

Fresh thermal paste on your processor (should be less than $5) from a local repair shop is a good place to start. Be careful regarding static and just put a tiny bit (about the size of a dime maximum).

Second option is upgraded heatsink/fan combo. Should be less than $20. Again, you can get this at your local repair shop. If you aren't sure what kind, take your computer in and they will show you what to buy.

What can I do to stop dizziness aquired from my computer monitor?

I get dizzy while looking at my work computer screen, but not when doing other stuff or looking at my laptop screens or someone else's computer screen.

Anyone know what I can do to stop this from happening so that I can still work on my computer? I'm looking for options other than trying to replace the monitor.

What can I do to stop dizziness aquired from my computer monitor?
More than likely your refresh rate is set incorrectly for your particular monitor. (This is measured in Hertz (Hz) and is the rate at which your monitor displays it's picture.)

Depending on your resolution settings and type of monitor, there are suggested settings by the manufacturer you need to apply.

Even if the screen and text look clear, if the refresh rate is set incorrectly, it can cause a flickering of the monitor screen... often times at such a high rate that you can't visually detect any difference.

However... your brain and eyes actually do. This leads to dizziness, nausea, and eye weakness.

I'd either contact your desktop support people where you work, or find out who manufactures your particular monitor and model, and check to see how to adjust the settings properly.

Good luck.
Reply:maybe the settings isn't right. and don't stay too long in the computer. of course, rest your eyes too.
Reply:Get stoned first or do meth just make sure you dont get caught.
Reply:you should take time to rest your eyes from your work computer because I sometimes get dizzy from working on school projects but not while I'm playing games. You don't have to stop for long, just 5 minutes every half hour to an hour should help.
Reply:Why dont you fight fire with fire. Simply move your chair in the middle of the room and have someone spin you in your chair over and over again until you are really really dizzy. Then the new dizzyness will counter affect the dizzyness you get from your monitor. LOL
Reply:Turn down the brightness and up the contrast. You might also want to sit a little further away from the screen so you have peripheral of your surroundings.

Expanding computer space. What is the most cost effective way to expand memory space on a computer?
you could buy an external hard drive or compress your drive.

clean out temp files.

delete programs not needed.

try running a tune-up program, like Tune-Up Utilities, it gives a trial.

http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-u...
Reply:Go to My Computer, select your drive and right click on it. Select properties, on the pop up window you will see 2 boxes at the bottom of it, check the box which says "compress drive to save space", click apply and then OK. By this way you will have good amount of free space. Also there are programs running in background, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to activate your task manager, check the processes running list. remove unwanted programs. NOTE: If you are not sure, what this program is, go to internet like yahoo engine and in the search bar type the file name same as on your task manager list, it will give you details and importance of that program.

This way you will clear huge amount of memory.

Hope this will help you out.

How do I start the computer with the keyboard?

I want to be able to start the computer using the keyboard. Not from hibernation or stand by but from a shut down state. Is there a way?

How do I start the computer with the keyboard?
There is a way but it may involve tweaking the bios and/ or the motherboard.

My motherboard supports a feature that allows me to start up (or turn ON) by pressing a key but I need to open my computer and replace a jumper into a different location to turn this on.

Some motherboards can do it by simply turning it on in the BIOS. There will be a option where it says "boot up from keyboard [disabled]" you can change this to "enabled"

Refer to your manual or check your BIOS to do this. If you bought your computer from HP, Dell, Gateway, Acer, or from any other big manufacturers, then most likely it NOT gonna have this feature. I built my pc and i can do whatever i want with it ^^
Reply:There is only one way.Grab the keyboard with both hands and with its corner press the power button! LOL

Unless you wire the keyboard there is no other way.
Reply:This isn't possible to do. The power switch on your computer is a physical switch which must be pressed to turn the computer on. In all honesty, standby mode tends to be very efficient and can make it so you never have to hit that pesky power button.
Reply:This is possible if your motherboard supports it. You need to get into your computers BIOS, generally by pressing delete repeatedly just after powering it on. When in the BIOS look for an option to Power On with keyboard, then save and exit. More than likely, if you bought a regular computer from a store, like HP, Dell ,Gateway, etc, it does not support this.
Reply:Press F1
Reply:Depends on the keyboard. There are some keyboards that have a power button on them and you have to go into the BOIS and set it up to allow the computer to be shut down and powered on from the keyboard.
Reply:please forget the question

How do I deduct a computer and laptop from taxes?

In 2007 I purchased a laptop and computer both for $900 each which are used for my Internet business...Can I deduct the total cost of $1,800? Or if I can't deduct $1,800...what is the amount I can deduct?

How do I deduct a computer and laptop from taxes?
are they both used soley for the business?

If yes, you may have to depreciate them (basically, claim the value as a deduction over a number of years).

If not, don't risk the audit by trying to claim them.

What exactly do I need to format my computer?

I have a regular Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed in my computer and I want to format it. I have never done so.

Can I use any Windows XP Service Pack 2 cd or do i need to buy a new one?

Do I need a cd key in order for the formatted computer to be genuine?

Will I be able to automatically update my computer if my computer is geniune, if formatting my computer makes my computer no a geniune one?

What exactly do I need to format my computer?
Hi,

to reformat your system is really easy just do this, "backup all your stuff first" then put your windows install disc into your CD drive and then reboot your system, when it boots from the disc select install, then reformat, then install back onto the same partition again (that's important) and "Bingo" you have done a clean install of windows XP on your system, you need the Key code to install windows from your CD and also to validate your copy for windows update as well. hope this helps you.
Reply:f you have the Win software, there is no problem? Put the disk into the drive, and a command "press any key to boot from CD". Do it, and follow the menu instructions. When it ask you if u want to make a new partition, don't make one, unless u need it. When the machine asks if you want to format the drive, you can choose not to format, or to format as NTSF (For a good job, do not use "quick format"It will tell you what letter to choose to format the disk, enter the letter and good buy to disk, it will be formated (You better have the windows disk to reinstall it)
Reply:As long as you have a genuine copy of XP and the key that came with it that's all you need. But if you've never done it and aren't sure of what you're doing...have someone who knows what they're doing, do it for you. Once you wipe the hard drive you're on your own. There can be driver issues and configuration settings that may keep you from getting your box up and running properly again. Don't bother to use a bogus copy of windows. In alot of cases the MS servers will either reject the key during installation or as soon as you connect to the internet. Or even worse, a few months down the road when you do an online driver search and a message appears that says "...you have 3 days to activate windows..." Since the release of Vista it can be tricky to find a retail copy of XP anymore so make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot.

How come my computer always ask for disk check when I turn on my computer?

When I turn my computer on it ask for a disk check but finds no error. I shutdown my computer properly but it always still has disk check problems. Any solution?

How come my computer always ask for disk check when I turn on my computer?
You don't say what operating system you are using, if you are using XP there are some possible solutions here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_c.htm

Scroll about a 1/3 the way down the page.
Reply:sure you are closing out properly??

may have an automatic setting to scan disk upon start up

and have to change that setting

have a great 2008
Reply:I had this problem. What I did was skip the check at start up, then I checked the disk manually. If it continues to deep asking for disk checks after you fix any errors, I'd get a new hard drive, because it may mean your disk is failing, thus creating the possibility of total data loss.

Here's how to check (XP):

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that you want to check.

2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.

3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

4. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

5. Click Start.
Reply:Its not your disk that is a problem. You computer is checking for a Drive, which is not there, with "No Response" from the disk, it calls an Error.

The disk drive that it is looking for is usually the A: drive..which new computers don't have that.

To fix it, right when the the windows starts Press F2, or whatever the key is to enter the SETUP menu. Then go to drive, and Turn Off A: or Diskette drive. after that..go to Save and Exit, let the computer boot up.

How do I start a program under another password protected user when a computer is restarted?

I have a Swan security camera program running under a password protected user in Windows XP. Someone else uses the computer during the day and because of our timeclock is running on the same computer sometimes they have to restart the computer. When they restart it leaves us without the camera program running under the Admin user. I can't move the cameras to a different computer, so I am hoping I could just write a .bat file or something that at startup executes the camera program under the Admin user. Thanks.

How do I start a program under another password protected user when a computer is restarted?
You can do this with scheduled tasks. Just need the admins password to set it up.

How do I fix my computer screen so that I can get rid of the strange blue lines that appear over dark colors?

Whenever my computer has to display dark colors, like a black background, it appears with blue, vibrating, horizontal stips through it. The stripes are thin, and move slightly, making everything really annoying to try to read or look at.

This just started happening about a week ago, when I turned on my pc. And I have restarted it, auto-adjusted it, messed with the color settings, etc, with nothing doing. Help!

How do I fix my computer screen so that I can get rid of the strange blue lines that appear over dark colors?
if its a laptop u need to sotter the line that go from the parts to the screen...if its a tower get a new monitor.
Reply:On the monitor turn down the brightness and adjust to a higher contrast, as you turn down the brightness go slow and turn it until the lines have just disappeared, then adjust the contrast, the brightness uses a lot more power to the monitor causing the lines, you should be ok after that, hope this helps and good luck.
Reply:Press, Left Shift Key+Left Alt Key+Print Screen.

The result:

Then the screen appears to the high level contrast. In this screen helps for the person of low level site problems.

After, the windows will give Special color scheme.

Suppose, you don't need, press the same key.

How do you completly erase everything from your computer and start over new?

My friend just gave me her computer, Windows XP Home Edition, and it has at least a million files on it. I would like to just start over completly new.

I have high speed DSL, but the computer still runs very slowly. Is there like a fast/safe way to just delete everything with out doing it one by one? Thank you!

How do you completly erase everything from your computer and start over new?
It's tough, but if you have your windows CD, you can do it.

-Insert the disk.

-Restart the computer

-Hit any key when prompted.

-A blue screen will come up. Let it load for a minute.

-Select Install Fresh Copy of Windows XP.

-Delete the Partitioned space.(Format)

-Create a Partitioned Space.

-Install on the New Partitioned Space.

-Let it load, enter information.

BAM!

Average time is between 45min-1hour.

After that, you will have to download everything you want on the computer.

-Enjoy!
Reply:Yes you can by a way called formating the hard drive but this is not something to be done unless you know what you are doing. I have done it many times on several different computers and all had different things that needed to be done.

1) It may not be the large file clutter that is slowing down the computer but possibly the CPU or a low amount of RAM.

2) When you perform a system wipe many times you erase system drivers such as the chipset driver, to the LAN driver, or sound driver. These must all be downloaded and saved to a disk and installed once windows is up and running.

3) You will lose all programs installed on the computer such as Microsoft office or any anti virus software and you may not have access to the disks that are required to reinstall them. You will also lose any important files, pictures, etc... so make sure to save these to a disk or flash drive before performing the wipe.

4) You need the Windows XP disk and the system key. If you dont have these the format can not be performed. If you install windows but do not have the system key it will continue to ask for it for 30 days and after the 30 days all access will be cut of until it is entered.

So all in all make sure you have somebody do it that is qualified if you decide to do it at all.
Reply:You can just use the XP home install diskette if the computer has a partition with the xp install on it on the boot you will see the press some button to boot into the install menu. But if its running slow I would check on the amount of memory/ram it has aswell. If it only has 256-512mb I would look into getting atleast 768mb-1gb of memory total for XP home just to help speed things up. Thanks
Reply:Yes xx, do a complete re-install. Put the disks that should have come with the pc into the tray and do the complete thing. You'll have a brand new machine.

Some flash drives will only work with USB 2 and your old computer may have USB 1. See if there is a driver available on the manufacturer's web site.

How do I transport the songs on iTunes from one computer to the other?

Hi. I wanted to burn a CD from my iTunes program but my computer doesn't have a burner, my brother's does. So I was wondering, how can I take my songs to my brother's computer? Something that you probably ought to know, is that my ipod doesn't respond when I plug it in to my brother's computer, that's another problem.

How do I transport the songs on iTunes from one computer to the other?
Is there any way to network his computer to yours? If so, you can install the iTunes program on his computer, then copy the original "m4p" files you bought with the iTunes program to his computer through the network connection. You'll have to sign into your iTunes account and "authorize" his computer to play your iTunes files first (you're allowed to authorize up to 5 computers per account).

How do I get my computer to go a little faster?

My computer is a lap top Inspiron. It is about a year or so old. I cleaned old programs out, cookies, internet files and junk off. But it is still slow when I try to boot it up or start a program.

How do I get my computer to go a little faster?
The greatest performance boost you can give a PC or laptop is to purchase more RAM. Remember, when dealing with memory more is better.

The second best performance boost you can give a PC or

laptop is to "wash your Windows". Once a month do the following:

Defragment your HDD.

Clean up and delete your temp files.

Scan your HDD for errors.

Scan your PC for adware/spyware.

Once a week scan your PC for viruses especially if you download a lot of stuff.

Remove all applications that don't need to startup with Windoze through "MSCONFIG". Do the following:

Click on Start -%26gt; Run.

Type msconfig

The "System Configuration Utility" will show up.

Click on the "startup" tab.

Remove anything there that is not needed to startup. Things such as MS Office, iTunes or whatever is not necessary for Windows or your security. If in doubt, there are websites devoted to these things.

When done, click on "OK" and it will ask you to reboot. Please do so. When Windoze then starts up again it will say that you've done the system configuration utility. Put a checkmark in the box saying "I don't want to see this message every time I start" and click on "OK" to save your changes.

Once you've cleaned out all the cruft, Windoze should start faster than it did.

There is also the step of last resort which is a little extreme and time consuming but it will definitely help. Save what you want to keep in secondary storage then reformat your laptop. You'll get a fresh version of Windoze and it will run faster.
Reply:start%26gt;run%26gt;type 'msconfig' press enter.

when window opens - switch to the 'startup' tab.

uncheck un-needed startup programs.
Reply:Right click on the C drive in My Computer.

See how much space you have left on your hard drive.

Maybe you have to much on your hard drive.

You could also need more RAM.

How many programs do you have installed also. Some programs are memory hogs, I know Vista is.
Reply:go to start all programs and computer tools or something like that and just find defrag and just run that its on all computers 95-vista it sorts all of your files and puts the same ones together
Reply:email me i will send you some registry hacks that makes your comp faster. Also is it because it is slowing down on the internet or is it all slow. and always have been. Try www,ewido.com if your internet is slow this will help.
Reply:I would defrag your laptop. It always helps cause it comacts your files together and doesn't leave all the spaces in your harddrive.
Reply:it kinda depends on which internet u have too

i used to have Netscape and AOL and they r soo slow but now i have roadrunner and it made my computar SOO fast and it would load in a few seconds
Reply:There are several primary reasons could cause your computer to be slow and also some softwares you can download to speed up it.

First,Corruption and Errors within your registry. The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

http://fix-slow-computer.info

lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.

Second,Your computer is loaded with spyware/adware.spyware/adware hamper your computer's performance. It use system resources and slow your computer down.

So, to speed up your slow computer, use a registry cleaner software and clean your registry files first. It will make all the difference, and provide you with the immediate fix you need for your slow computer. Then, download a good anti-spyware to get rid of spyware/adware in your computer.

How do you completly erase everything from your computer and start over new?
Start over completely? Reboot the PC with a copy of your preferred OS in the CD drive.
Reply:If you dont have the original cd, then best you can do is go to control panel/add remove programs.

Uninstall what you don't want.

after that, look for a program called ccleaner and auslogic defrag.

Those will clear trash files off it and reorganize the hard disk.

Also consider the fact there may be spware and viruses on it that cause the slowness.

I use avgfree to kill viruses and Spybot search and destroy to kill spyware.
Reply:If the computer has no backup image on it you can't do anything without the CD's.Look on boot for a short message on the screen like"hit F11 for recovery"

You can also borrow a CD from someone and use the serial from the sticker on your computer.
Reply:First you need the original os of the pc. Since you dont have the os for that computer you may need to get one.. Is the os for that computer is genuine?
Reply:You can return your computor to factory settings and that will remove everything from your computor...

Go to pc tools and then System restore ...
Reply:well you have two options.

2) simply delete the files manualy

Can computer paper be used as a mulch barrier?

I've read about using layers of newspaper and cardboard, but I was wondering how many sheets of computer paper can be used if I don't have newspaper and cardboard. We have a ton of paper in our office to be recycled and I'd love to be able to use it as a mulch barrier. I wasn't sure if computer paper work work as well as newspaper or cardboard.

Can computer paper be used as a mulch barrier?
(Paper sales for over 25 years)

I have always heard people on TV shows using paper as mulch. I personally wouldn't recommend using any paper product. The above comment is not correct...all of those types of paper have acids in them. However, the worst part is the chlorine used in the newspaper and computer paper. It is used to whitening the product during the paper making procedure. Most of the fine paper mills have moved away from this, but the lowers end mills still use it. (newspaper, computer paper(pinfed style)) If I was going to use anything, I would try to find some pine straw instead.

GL
Reply:computer paper has a lot more acid in it that newspaper or cardboard. That high acidity can damage and even kill plants.

How do I get my computer to stop showing me the desktop screen?

How do I get my computer to stop showing me the desktop screen?
Hi! Just another possibility: if you happen to hit ALT and TAB you can send yourself back to the desktop (it's easier than you think! LOL ).

Also, is your virus scan up to date and when is the last time you ran it? This sounds like a highly irritating 'prank' type problem that a virus designer would perpetrate.

Good Luck!

How do I stop my computer from freezing everytime i open a pdf file?
are you opening the file in Acrobat Reader? Make sure you have the latest version.

Does the problem occur w/ other pdf files, or ONLY this one? If it is only this one, its a corrupted nasty file...if it is all, then i would reinstall or update acrobat reader...if u r still having the problem, and have restarted your computer it could be something else going on....

Reply:Well, there could be a few reasons for this. Most likely your computer is bogged down by spyware and/or viruses. (I'm making an assumption here.) Adobe Acrobat isn't a very lightweight program, and uses a decent ammount of system resources when opening. If you have an older PC, it could be too much for your PC to handle.

But there are things you can do. First, make sure your anti-virus is up to date. If you don't have an anti-virus, or your subscription has expired, you can download and install Avast! Anti Virus for free. Go to http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-... for the free home version.

Next - download and install Spybot Search and Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org This will remove the spyware.

Make sure both programs are up to date and have done full checks of your system. Lastly, if all else fails - download the PDF to your PC instead of opening it up through your browser (IE). After you have downloaded the file, open it up by double-clicking on it.

Hope this helped!
Reply:You probably need to update Acrobat Reader.

Reply:scan for viruses and protect it from harmful things.
Reply:Uninstall Adobe Reader, reboot, reinstall Adobe Reader.

Reply:Try updating your software. Also, make sure that your computer is not trying to run too many programs in the background.
Reply:Check out http://www.pc-optimizer-pro.info

With pc optimizer pro you can safely clean, repair and optimize your computer.

It will help improve your system performance and stop freezing without expensive hardware upgrades.

Good luck!
Reply:Well there are probably 25 things that start when you start up your PC.. you need to go into your settings and remove things like Quicktime player.. and adobe updates.. that can be initated when YOU want rather EVERYTIME you start it up.

Try AVG.com... the full version is free for 30 days and if you need a special code.... hit me and Ill pass it down.. ( for after the 30 days)

In that it scans for spyware. malware..etc.... but there is a tab called analysis... and then click on auto start... I bet there is like 20 things there.... I was shocked when I seen mines....

OR try Defragmenting your PC

Click

START%26gt;

All Programs%26gt;

Accessories%26gt;

System TOOLS%26gt;

Disk Defragmenter.

Click Defragment... and it will do it for you. This compresses files and re-organizes them so your PC doesnt have to look all over for files.. like in a big messy bedroom if you will....

Though sometimes if the files are BIG%26gt;.. it is gonna freeze unles you got a ULTRA BIG processor.... It still sometimes happens to me... your connection can also be a part of that as well.....
Reply:If you are using Abobe Acrobat or Reader to open these files, both are resource heavy and if you have insufficient RAM, it could cause these problems. You'll either need to close some of your running programs or stop some programs from running at startup.

You can also try Foxit instead, it doesn't have as big a footprint as it uses less system resources.

How do I delete my iTunes library completely off my computer?

So I recently had to switch all my music from iTunes to Windows Music Player so I copied/converted everything over, but now my computer is on overload from doubled-up music files. I've already gone into add/remove programs and removed iTunes, but I can't find where all the music was stored because it still seems that my computer is way more bogged down than it was just minutes before making the change. Any ideas? My computer is older and limited on space, and I just need it to make space for school files for just a couple more months. Anything would be awesome and helpful. Thanks in advance.

How can I schedule my computer to wake up from sleep mode?

I use Windows Vista and usually my laptop is plugged in at home. I set my computer to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. So that when I go to bed, so does the computer. I set my scheduling software to play a song when its alarm goes off. I'd like to software to play a song when I wake up in the morning. The trouble is that since the computer is still sleeping when I awake, the software doesn't play the song. So, I'd like the computer to awake alittle earlier than I do. That way the alarm can go off and I can wake up to a song.

I did try to set my laptop to go into hybrid-sleep mode, but this didn't help.

How do you transfer all the hardware components of your computer into another computer case?

I am planning to get one of those cool looking computer cases wiht the light to replace my stock and boring looking Dell computer case.

I just want to know how hard it is and what I need to do or know.

Thanks.

How do you transfer all the hardware components of your computer into another computer case?
It's not that difficult but requires order and before starting make sure that you'll have right size factor to fix the mother board and have the right space for plugs (USB, Serial, screen, etc.)

Second, since you are going from a DELL, make sure that you will not need to change hard drive, CDROM or any other drive.

Then proceed by order:

1. Unplug all drives and remember how things were done.

2. Disconnect energy (from drives and the one that power the mother board)

3. Once drives and all plugs have been removed start removing the screw fixing your mother board.

Move the mother board to the other case, start pluging led, and all the new things you want your mother board to support. Then move to drives and eventually power the whole new box and enjoy.

It everything goes well you should not spend more than 2 hours working on this.

Good luck ;-)
Reply:Switching cases around can be a bit tricky becuase of a few things that you need to take care of. First off you will have to be careful of the mother board if you plan on moving if the new case does not have one. You'll need to be sure to screw in some "stand offs" which are little metal pegs your case should come with. They should be set up to support the mother board where the case does not have a raise to meet it. You are also going to have to look at ALL of the jumpers on your mother board and find the user manual for it if possible. These small jumpers control the power light, power switch, reset, and internal speakers. If you do not re-connect them properly in your new case, the system will not boot up.

Other than the mother board jumpers the rest of the install should be a peice of cake and rerquire no more than a screw driver. Just move the components into the new case, screw them into place, and re-connect your cables the way you had them before and all should be well.

How can I add a printer to my computer with out a Windows 98 start up disk?

I don't have a start-up disk for my computer and I am trying to install a printer and I can't because my computer keeps a sking for a start up disk. How can I gey the printer to work.

How can I add a printer to my computer with out a Windows 98 start up disk?
I'm confused. You shouldn't need a strtup disk to load a printer.

To make a startup disk. put a floppy in the drive, double click my computer, right click the A drive, click format and check the block that says make system disk.

As for the printer, go to the printer manufacturer's website, go to the support page and find the drivers for the model printer you have. Save the drivers to your desktop and run the executable file to install the drivers. Turn the printer on and print a test page.
Reply:Go to the internet site for the printer and download the drivers for win 98. But be aware that you new printer may not have support for win 98.
Reply:Unfortunately you need a startup disk. Your printer shouldn't have come without one. If you know anybody who have the same kind of printer you do, you could borrow it from them and make a copy of it just in case you may have to uninstall it and need to reinstall it later.
Reply:Go online, locate the printer's company website and download the driver directly from the website. You can avoid going through the computer. If that doesn't work, I might locate one (DISC) and send the file. What kind of printer (brand/model)?
Reply:You could check the Windows Help Site. Other than that, i suggest you upgrade your OS and you shouldn't have a problem.
Reply:Sometimes Win 98 will ask for files that are already installed. When it prompts you for a file, from that window browse to the "C" drive and then to the "Windows" folder and then to the "System" or "System32" folder. (Can't remember which one comes with Win 98).

Hopefully it will find the file within those folders. If not you will need to search for the file on-line and you mayve able to find some common files that are available on the internet.

If not I'm afraid you will have to find someone who has a Win 98 cd. You might be able to buy one cheap on eBay.

Good luck.

How much energy does a computer actually use?

My father every night shutdowns the computer. It is is about 3 years old. I cant stand that its always shut down. Please help me understand how much electric energy is saved by doing this. Or is it just the same to keep it on?

How much energy does a computer actually use?
It doesn't cost much to leave it running and uses very little energy.

Here's a nifty little calculator provided by my energy provider: https://secure.progress-energy.com/sid/c...

according to them, it costs around $0.005 (thats 1/2 a cent) per hour a computer is turned on.

Now, lets just say you leave your computer on for a month straight. Thats 24 hrs x 30 days x .5 cents/hour = 360 cents or $3.60. Not very costly in my opinion.
Reply:i can tell you right now a computer does not take up much energy. it does save money by shutting it down, but it does not cost much to leave it running as i do. i leave my desktop running all the time, my gaming desktop i shutdown and my laptop i shutdown.

but if you keep your computer on all day you have to make sure to keep it clean or the cooling system, probably a fan since your comp is 3 years old will clog with dust, overheat and either self shutdown from overheating or fry.

if you keep it running all day keep it clean, but i can tell you now, it does not cost much to keep it running all the time

How do i reset my computer to factory setting when I cannot even log-in to the system?

I have a IBM T 22 thinkpad, OS is Windows XP. My problem is that the name of the computer was changed without creating login profile, so now I cannot login to the computer using the old profile and password. I ould like to be able to login to the profile or iat least to reset the computer to the factory setting so that I can at least save my computer even though I might lose all my data. Can someone please help. I am not a technical person.

How do i reset my computer to factory setting when I cannot even log-in to the system?
Try logging in with username 'IBM USER' with no password, or type 'Administrator' as username and password as the password or leave both username and password fields blank and try then. If either don't work, reboot the laptop and after the 'IBM' splash screen comes up, press the F11 key until you see a IBM Recovery count up starting at the bottom of the screen. Once in the recovery 'mode' or screen it will give you an option to recover the computer, probably the second or third icon in the menu on the left. Choose recover, then it will give you three options on how to recover. Choose the first one or the one that says recover Windows or operating system only. When it's done, after 20-30 minutes, it should let you create another login name or profile. Good Luck.
Reply:try logging in as administrator leave password blank and see if it will let you in if not get this tool

What causes a computer to suddenly freeze and shut off on its own?

My computer will shut down on its own and a black and white screen says that Windows did not start properly due to a possible hardware change. I havent changed any hardware on my computer. I have to turn the computer off by pressing the power button on the tower (ctrl/alt/delete doesnt work). I have Norton Antivirus 2005 installed with all the updates. What could be the problem and how do I fix it?

What causes a computer to suddenly freeze and shut off on its own?
It could be several things but overheating and impending hardware failure come to mind. Do the shutdowns occur after the computer has been running for a while or at boot time? If the computer has been running for a while it is likely an overheating problem due to a malfunctioning, or nonfunctioning, fan and needs service to prevent catastrophic failure that could lead to loss of your data and costly repairs or replacement of the entire pc.
Reply:Processor may be overheating. Is your fan running? Loose power cord?

What is a good desktop computer to buy?

I am planning to buy a desktop, and I want to make the right choice in buying one. I mostly use the computer for surfing, listening to music, watching videos, and video capturing. What would seem like a good choice at this time?

What is a good desktop computer to buy?
I would say HP / Compaq.

Dells are complete garbage and overpriced, witnessed by their loss of marketshare to HP / Compaq.

Nearly all new PC's ship with Vista instead of XP. And Vista is a memory (RAM) hog. To keep a PC with Vista speed, you're going to want 2gb of RAM.

And of course you'll want a dual-core processor. Great for multi-tasking, video/audio editing, gaming and any other program that uses lot of CPU power.

The best are in this order:

Intel Core 2 Duo

AMD X2

Intel Pentium D

The Core 2 and X2 are leaps ahead of the Pentium D.

Circuit City and Best Buy have deal on every week. I would just by the cheapest Core 2 and X2 machine and add a 2gb RAM kit from newegg for $70

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...

Or, if you're adventurous build your own- it's very easy. You get top quality parts for the money, instead of lowest bidder, assembly line crap.
Reply:Best Made Desktop: Compaq

Best Gaming Computer: Alienware (expensive)
Reply:If you are not computer savvy or don't like messing around with hardware, get a pre-built PC from makers like Dell or HP. If you are game to build your own PC, you can buy all the components needed in an online shop like http://newegg.com and save a lot of money in the bargain.

Buying a Mac based desktop is not a bad idea and all Apple stores have a decent portfolio of beautiful iMac desktops but it is definitely more expensive than PC's. All the best in your quest.
Reply:HP with AMD Athlon 5200 64 x2. It does all the applications you've describe and more. I have HP w/ AMD Athlon 5000 64 x2 and very happy with it!
Reply:Go to http://www.tigerdirect.com and look to the left for catagories. Build your own. for around $600 you can build a big beauty. A 3.0ghz intel P4 cpu, 2 gig ddr2 ram, a 256mb Nvidia Graphics Card, 250gb hdd sata, dvdrw/cdrw, 19" lcd wide screen monitor, Intel socket 775mobo, Case with 450 watt ps. All for $565.00 plus Shipping. They accept all major credit cards, checks, money orders, and ebanking. Or you can buy premades there for really cheap too.
Reply:Dell makes pretty good pc's...Sony would be my next choice. Alienware is too expensive and overlly and exessively pricy.

Higher prices do not make a pc better. Check in craigslist.org locally and you can find many at a lower cost.

Goodluck!
Reply:I custom build computers, and if you tell me the max amount of cash you can spend, then i can quote you on a system. Also, do you need just the tower, or things like keyboard, mouse, monitor, ect.

And I guaranty that my price will be the best you can find, more system for the buck

Just message me if you are interested
Reply:Compaq. But check processore and CPU features also.
Reply:HP isn't bad
Reply:Dell....by far. Sony has great laptops, so does Toshiba, but when it comes to PCs aside from a great gaming rig like Alienware...I would stick with a Dell.

I was an NT admin who ran a helpdesk for a company with 2600 Dell PCs. Out of the 5 years I ran the helpdesk we had maybe a dozen or less PCs that had to have hardware replaced. Now if you take into account that about 3/4 of them were left on day and night, then I would say that is a pretty good track record. Also, now-a-days, you cannot beat the prices of them either. Try to stay away from Celeron or Sempron processors though, it's like getting a 4 cyclinder motor in a Cadilac. Sure if you have some PC skills you can overclock them, but if you are looking for some value for your dollar it will go a lot further with a Duo Core or something similar.

Good luck, Joe
