How do I transfer a video from a camcorder to a computer hard drive?

I think I need 'Firewire'? But I don't have the socket on my computer that seems to be on firewire. I do have plenty of USB ports, but can those handle digital images instead of data?

Where do the ports for plugging firewire into a computer reside? Is it on the motherboard or video card? Trying to determine which component on my computer is old and needs replaced.

depends what kind of camcorder you have...

- MiniDV

-harddrive

-CD

the ports for firewire are on the video card, for an old computer there isnt much you can do though.
Reply:No firewire? No problem, buy a PCI Firewire card which slots to your motherboard.

From what i noe,

SONY has a dock that outputs to USB for video capturing in PC. :)
Reply:Go to bestbuy or compusa, that type of store, purchase a firewire card ieee1394 and a firewire cord. Install the card in your pc and hook your camera to your firewire card via a firewire cord. Use the software that came with your camera.
Reply:The easiest way is to use a convertor. There cheap and work with VCR's as well. A nice connection diagram is included with the instructions. Follow the link below.
Reply:when asking people to help you solve your problem, you need to give them as much information as possible. Is your cam digital? Mini-dv? Mini-dvd? All of that is important because if you have mini-dvd, for example, you don't need firewire at all to get to your pc. You use a program called Flaskmpeg which will convert your dvd files to avi. If you have cassette (I'm assuming digital), then you do need firewire which you can buy cheap on ebay (under $20). For gen info, type in "freewheeling franklin" in the

'search for questions' box at top.
