How many fans and what kind of a power supply should a computer have?

I am thinking a computer has a minimum of 2 fans, the case fan and the CPU fan/heatsink but I'm wondering if I should get fans for the hard drive and RAM, or other fans as well? Please note that I live in a very warm apartment w/o air conditioning. Any recommended brands of fans for CPU and the rest of the computer?





As for the power supply, how do I figure out what kind to get? Is it better to err on the side of high wattage, or do I risk damaging my computer?

it depends what you use the computer for and what kind of components you have. I would reccomend at least 400 watt as a mininum. If you have a high-performance processor, multiple hard drives, video cards, lots of PCI cards, lots ofRAM etc. you should get at least 500watts. As for cooling, there are hard drive cooling enclosures available for as low as 20$, RAM heat spreaders can cool RAM, or you could consider liquid-cooling your system if the PC gets really hot

Reply:as for the fans use quiet ones that move the max amount of air per fan and with your lack of ac I would cool everything i could but one fan that moves a lot of air can replace multiple fans.Use the cubic feet per min rating as a guide.The greater the better but most of the time the greater the more noisy its going to be.


as for the power supply get the highest wattage rating you can get (for a reasonable price) you'll need it for add on cards and such. The mother board type determines the type of power supply you get because of the connectors and voltage requirements.Have fun.
Reply:yes...its best to have at least 2 fans: 1 intake, 1 exhaust but the more fans the better. or...you can buy a water cooling kit and water cool everything (big bucks)





get a power supply from a respectable company (antec, enermax, ocz, tagan, forton, seasonic, PCPC) and the higher wattage the better. there's a reason y some power supplies are cheaper than others for the same or more wattage, and that is quality and "cleanliness" (stablity) of power output.

i wouldnt advise changing the fan in the PSU since can be tricky and they things can still hold a lot of juice even when they are unplugged for hours.
Reply:Higher wattage is recommended - it will not harm anything. Get yourself a good 400 or 500 watt power supply - that will suffice.





As for fans, if you are worried about cooling then the set up you mentioned is fine as long as you do have a high wattage supply. I would also recommend two case fans (one drawing in and one exhausting) if you really want to get efficiency from your internal fans.
Reply:A good quality power supply such as Antec, Enermax, Seasonic, Thermaltake etc. not just one with high wattage numbers. If you find a model you like search the web for reviews from hopefully satisfied users. Without knowing more about your system it is hard to say how much power you need.





Because you are in a very warm apartment w/o air conditioning, I would go with a liquid cooled setup. If you can put in a window AC, you and your PC will be much more comfortable.
