What is causing my computer to freeze while I play computer games?

I own a Toshiba laptop with the Windows XP operating system.

Whenever I most computer games, such as The Sims 2 and Freestyle, it freezes up about 15 minutes into gameplay. A black screen apears and a repetative sound starts. I have to restart my computer by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.

I've already contacted the technical team for The Sims 2, but their suggestions didn't help.

Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening? Or even WHY it's happening?

Im betting that your computer isn't powerful enough to handle the game and its functions . All of those games come with minimum system requirements on the back of the Box ...many people never even think to check to make sure that their comp can actually HANDLE the game . Nowadays , technolgy moves so fast even a processeer two years old is considered old , and may be outside the minimum required for your game . Sad , but true . Im married to a techie...it's always a new something or other getting installed :-)

Also , with graphics in modern gaming the way they are , the most common thing that causes lock up is outdated or underspec'd video/graphics card. it's an easy fix , and too expensive ...

Reply:most probably your video card or processor can't handle it. you should either buy a PC or upgrade some of your parts.
Reply:your computer is slow needs ram, or probably good processor, add details like your computer specs den it wud b easy to help
Reply:Check your control panel and make sure that you don't have the computer set up to go into hibernation or some power saving mode after 15 minutes.
Reply:before installing a program or software, always check the systems specification against your existing system. It may be that the progam and your system is incompatible.
Reply:too much stuff. delete old stuff.
Reply:crappy vid. card?
Reply:maybe not enough RAM memory.
Reply:Hi, I'm no computer technic, but maybe you've run out of processor memory, or the game is way too advanced for your laptop. Or maybe your video card is faulty, that happened to me with Battlefront 2. You may need to buy a new one. Why don't you contact Toshiba's customer support?

Hope this helps!
Reply:Hello there could be many problems, youve come to the right person.

1. You probably have about 400 spyware infections that you wouldnt even know about in which i would choose this award winning spyware protection to clear some of that off. http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/ke... if you dont want to buy it then just do the free search and delete the files that it shows you from the free scan yourself by clicking start then search then all files and folders and begin to type the file name exactly like the spyware doc shows you.

2. Another could be that you have too many programs running at the same time. if you think so press ctrl + alt + del and close any unnessesary programs.

3. your computer could just be too old and have to many programs installed in which you can buy a new memory card to add to your computer.
