How do I get my pictures to the computer?
you need a digital camera which usually comes with attachments for computers. You could also use cellphone with camera... attachment for computer sold seperately.
Reply:a4tech
Reply:You need to get a Digital camera with the USB wire to transfer the Images from the Camera . Or use a Mobile with a camera inbuilt . Then , use then USB wire provided with the camera to transfer the images .
Reply:It could be done in many ways either u opt for a bluetooth or infra red supported mobile ,with a camera ,shoot pics/videos and transfer it through the data transfer software available within the cd of the mobile .Or you go for any good digi cam and enjoy .

How do you transfer all the hardware components of your computer into another computer case?

I am planning to get one of those cool looking computer cases wiht the light to replace my stock and boring looking Dell computer case.

I just want to know how hard it is and what I need to do or know.

Thanks.

How do you transfer all the hardware components of your computer into another computer case?
It's not that difficult but requires order and before starting make sure that you'll have right size factor to fix the mother board and have the right space for plugs (USB, Serial, screen, etc.)

Second, since you are going from a DELL, make sure that you will not need to change hard drive, CDROM or any other drive.

Then proceed by order:

1. Unplug all drives and remember how things were done.

2. Disconnect energy (from drives and the one that power the mother board)

3. Once drives and all plugs have been removed start removing the screw fixing your mother board.

Move the mother board to the other case, start pluging led, and all the new things you want your mother board to support. Then move to drives and eventually power the whole new box and enjoy.

It everything goes well you should not spend more than 2 hours working on this.

Good luck ;-)
Reply:Switching cases around can be a bit tricky becuase of a few things that you need to take care of. First off you will have to be careful of the mother board if you plan on moving if the new case does not have one. You'll need to be sure to screw in some "stand offs" which are little metal pegs your case should come with. They should be set up to support the mother board where the case does not have a raise to meet it. You are also going to have to look at ALL of the jumpers on your mother board and find the user manual for it if possible. These small jumpers control the power light, power switch, reset, and internal speakers. If you do not re-connect them properly in your new case, the system will not boot up.

Other than the mother board jumpers the rest of the install should be a peice of cake and rerquire no more than a screw driver. Just move the components into the new case, screw them into place, and re-connect your cables the way you had them before and all should be well.

How can I add a printer to my computer with out a Windows 98 start up disk?

I don't have a start-up disk for my computer and I am trying to install a printer and I can't because my computer keeps a sking for a start up disk. How can I gey the printer to work.

How can I add a printer to my computer with out a Windows 98 start up disk?
I'm confused. You shouldn't need a strtup disk to load a printer.

To make a startup disk. put a floppy in the drive, double click my computer, right click the A drive, click format and check the block that says make system disk.

As for the printer, go to the printer manufacturer's website, go to the support page and find the drivers for the model printer you have. Save the drivers to your desktop and run the executable file to install the drivers. Turn the printer on and print a test page.
Reply:Go to the internet site for the printer and download the drivers for win 98. But be aware that you new printer may not have support for win 98.
Reply:Unfortunately you need a startup disk. Your printer shouldn't have come without one. If you know anybody who have the same kind of printer you do, you could borrow it from them and make a copy of it just in case you may have to uninstall it and need to reinstall it later.
Reply:Go online, locate the printer's company website and download the driver directly from the website. You can avoid going through the computer. If that doesn't work, I might locate one (DISC) and send the file. What kind of printer (brand/model)?
Reply:You could check the Windows Help Site. Other than that, i suggest you upgrade your OS and you shouldn't have a problem.
Reply:Sometimes Win 98 will ask for files that are already installed. When it prompts you for a file, from that window browse to the "C" drive and then to the "Windows" folder and then to the "System" or "System32" folder. (Can't remember which one comes with Win 98).

Hopefully it will find the file within those folders. If not you will need to search for the file on-line and you mayve able to find some common files that are available on the internet.

If not I'm afraid you will have to find someone who has a Win 98 cd. You might be able to buy one cheap on eBay.

Good luck.

How much energy does a computer actually use?

My father every night shutdowns the computer. It is is about 3 years old. I cant stand that its always shut down. Please help me understand how much electric energy is saved by doing this. Or is it just the same to keep it on?

How much energy does a computer actually use?
It doesn't cost much to leave it running and uses very little energy.

Here's a nifty little calculator provided by my energy provider: https://secure.progress-energy.com/sid/c...

according to them, it costs around $0.005 (thats 1/2 a cent) per hour a computer is turned on.

Now, lets just say you leave your computer on for a month straight. Thats 24 hrs x 30 days x .5 cents/hour = 360 cents or $3.60. Not very costly in my opinion.
Reply:i can tell you right now a computer does not take up much energy. it does save money by shutting it down, but it does not cost much to leave it running as i do. i leave my desktop running all the time, my gaming desktop i shutdown and my laptop i shutdown.

but if you keep your computer on all day you have to make sure to keep it clean or the cooling system, probably a fan since your comp is 3 years old will clog with dust, overheat and either self shutdown from overheating or fry.

if you keep it running all day keep it clean, but i can tell you now, it does not cost much to keep it running all the time

How do i reset my computer to factory setting when I cannot even log-in to the system?

I have a IBM T 22 thinkpad, OS is Windows XP. My problem is that the name of the computer was changed without creating login profile, so now I cannot login to the computer using the old profile and password. I ould like to be able to login to the profile or iat least to reset the computer to the factory setting so that I can at least save my computer even though I might lose all my data. Can someone please help. I am not a technical person.

How do i reset my computer to factory setting when I cannot even log-in to the system?
Try logging in with username 'IBM USER' with no password, or type 'Administrator' as username and password as the password or leave both username and password fields blank and try then. If either don't work, reboot the laptop and after the 'IBM' splash screen comes up, press the F11 key until you see a IBM Recovery count up starting at the bottom of the screen. Once in the recovery 'mode' or screen it will give you an option to recover the computer, probably the second or third icon in the menu on the left. Choose recover, then it will give you three options on how to recover. Choose the first one or the one that says recover Windows or operating system only. When it's done, after 20-30 minutes, it should let you create another login name or profile. Good Luck.
Reply:try logging in as administrator leave password blank and see if it will let you in if not get this tool

What causes a computer to suddenly freeze and shut off on its own?

My computer will shut down on its own and a black and white screen says that Windows did not start properly due to a possible hardware change. I havent changed any hardware on my computer. I have to turn the computer off by pressing the power button on the tower (ctrl/alt/delete doesnt work). I have Norton Antivirus 2005 installed with all the updates. What could be the problem and how do I fix it?

What causes a computer to suddenly freeze and shut off on its own?
It could be several things but overheating and impending hardware failure come to mind. Do the shutdowns occur after the computer has been running for a while or at boot time? If the computer has been running for a while it is likely an overheating problem due to a malfunctioning, or nonfunctioning, fan and needs service to prevent catastrophic failure that could lead to loss of your data and costly repairs or replacement of the entire pc.
Reply:Processor may be overheating. Is your fan running? Loose power cord?

What is a good desktop computer to buy?

I am planning to buy a desktop, and I want to make the right choice in buying one. I mostly use the computer for surfing, listening to music, watching videos, and video capturing. What would seem like a good choice at this time?

What is a good desktop computer to buy?
I would say HP / Compaq.

Dells are complete garbage and overpriced, witnessed by their loss of marketshare to HP / Compaq.

Nearly all new PC's ship with Vista instead of XP. And Vista is a memory (RAM) hog. To keep a PC with Vista speed, you're going to want 2gb of RAM.

And of course you'll want a dual-core processor. Great for multi-tasking, video/audio editing, gaming and any other program that uses lot of CPU power.

The best are in this order:

Intel Core 2 Duo

AMD X2

Intel Pentium D

The Core 2 and X2 are leaps ahead of the Pentium D.

Circuit City and Best Buy have deal on every week. I would just by the cheapest Core 2 and X2 machine and add a 2gb RAM kit from newegg for $70

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...

Or, if you're adventurous build your own- it's very easy. You get top quality parts for the money, instead of lowest bidder, assembly line crap.
Reply:Best Made Desktop: Compaq

Best Gaming Computer: Alienware (expensive)
Reply:If you are not computer savvy or don't like messing around with hardware, get a pre-built PC from makers like Dell or HP. If you are game to build your own PC, you can buy all the components needed in an online shop like http://newegg.com and save a lot of money in the bargain.

Buying a Mac based desktop is not a bad idea and all Apple stores have a decent portfolio of beautiful iMac desktops but it is definitely more expensive than PC's. All the best in your quest.
Reply:HP with AMD Athlon 5200 64 x2. It does all the applications you've describe and more. I have HP w/ AMD Athlon 5000 64 x2 and very happy with it!
Reply:Go to http://www.tigerdirect.com and look to the left for catagories. Build your own. for around $600 you can build a big beauty. A 3.0ghz intel P4 cpu, 2 gig ddr2 ram, a 256mb Nvidia Graphics Card, 250gb hdd sata, dvdrw/cdrw, 19" lcd wide screen monitor, Intel socket 775mobo, Case with 450 watt ps. All for $565.00 plus Shipping. They accept all major credit cards, checks, money orders, and ebanking. Or you can buy premades there for really cheap too.
Reply:Dell makes pretty good pc's...Sony would be my next choice. Alienware is too expensive and overlly and exessively pricy.

Higher prices do not make a pc better. Check in craigslist.org locally and you can find many at a lower cost.

Goodluck!
Reply:I custom build computers, and if you tell me the max amount of cash you can spend, then i can quote you on a system. Also, do you need just the tower, or things like keyboard, mouse, monitor, ect.

And I guaranty that my price will be the best you can find, more system for the buck

Just message me if you are interested
Reply:Compaq. But check processore and CPU features also.
Reply:HP isn't bad
Reply:Dell....by far. Sony has great laptops, so does Toshiba, but when it comes to PCs aside from a great gaming rig like Alienware...I would stick with a Dell.

I was an NT admin who ran a helpdesk for a company with 2600 Dell PCs. Out of the 5 years I ran the helpdesk we had maybe a dozen or less PCs that had to have hardware replaced. Now if you take into account that about 3/4 of them were left on day and night, then I would say that is a pretty good track record. Also, now-a-days, you cannot beat the prices of them either. Try to stay away from Celeron or Sempron processors though, it's like getting a 4 cyclinder motor in a Cadilac. Sure if you have some PC skills you can overclock them, but if you are looking for some value for your dollar it will go a lot further with a Duo Core or something similar.

Good luck, Joe

What kind of computer careers are out there for someone who is considering Real Estate?

I will be starting on my Bachelor's of Science in Computer Information Systems soon and I just wanted to know what kinds of computer careers can you get in Real Estate other than a Business Programmer for Real Estate software. I am looking for options out there in computers. Mature people only!!!

What kind of computer careers are out there for someone who is considering Real Estate?
You could be a specialist in setting up small business computer systems and networks (and maintaining them). You could work for a mortgage company or builder as a systems administrator (though firms big enough to have full time IT staff aren't all that common). My daughter works for a company that supplies new home builders with websites. All of the large real estate networks have internal systems and create websites for their agents.

Quite honestly if you are just beginning your education, let alone your career, your best bet is to keep a completely open mind as to what you will do after college. There are so many options that you may love that could escape your view if you pigeonhole yourself now.

Most of us are doing careers that have absolutely nothing to do with our college major. Life is constantly presenting new opportunities and you'll be happier if you're open to them.

My degree was in elecrical engineering. These days I make my living as a financial journalist, pr specialist and as owner of a social and outdoor adventure club. Over my career I've done semiconductor and computer sales, small business administration, technical writing, grocery store management, fashion design, office administration, VP of website development, content and software, publisher of one of the larger financil website, insurance agent and financial advisor.

And that's only to date! I change my careers as my interests change and to manage to keep a happy balance between my family and personal life, and my need to produce income in a way I find satisfying.

So...in summary..keep your options open, look for interesting internships during your college years so you can try out different fields without a commitment. Keep in mind that many careers today did not exist 10 or 20 years ago and there's every reason to believe there will be new opportunities down the road that we have yet to dream about.

Good luck.

My computer start up but I cant use any function on the window at al?

When I ve removed some of the ram from one computer to the other and change the sound card around, my computer begin all these problem. How do I fix it please send me some answer.

My computer start up but I cant use any function on the window at al?
try entering windows at safe mode, then open the device manager([right click]my computer-%26gt;properties-%26gt;hardware-%26gt;device manager), search for any question mark or X mark on a device, if it there then try uninstalling the device. then restart your PC, try to enter windows in normal mode. if its fail then reboot your PC then enter windows at safe mode again then open msconfig and uncheck all the auto startup programs, then restart your PC. if it works then one of the auto startup program is the problem, you could find the conflicting program by trying to start the auto startup programs one by one, until your windows freeze or hung.

if it doesnt work try installing your windows freshly, it means format your hard drive then reinstall your windows. REMEMBER TO COPY YOUR DATA TO OTHER PLACE BEFORE YOU DO THAT.

Next time before you remove any device from your PC try to uninstall the driver and any programs that comes with that device first. this will make sure your PC will boot normally after the device removed.
Reply:Very easy you have to many old programs that you haven't used for a while on your computer. Go into safe mode when you just start up, then go into start my computer. Click on programs and delete some of the old programs you don't or hardly use anymore. Then restart your computer, that should fix the problem. If not, I don't know what to tell you.
Reply:just re assamble the motherbord and remove processor and keep the processor and inter change the pci slots u problem sloves

How can I upload songs on a different computer onto my ipod without deleteing my songs?

Ok, well my computer is broken, that originally had my itunes on it. I bought a CD yesterday, and I want it on my iPod. My brother has itunes on his laptop, and I want to upload the CD onto his computer, and only get those 10 songs onto my ipod, not his whole library. How would I do this?

How can I upload songs on a different computer onto my ipod without deleteing my songs?
If you try to add those songs into your iPod, all the songs from your iPod will be erased and replaced with the songs from your brother's Library.

The only thing I can think of is to download all the songs from your iPod to his computer, add the songs from the CD, and then go through and pick which ones to add. Seems like it might take awhile though. :(

But if you'd like to try that, here's a website to tell you how:

It's easy, free, and you don't even have to download anything! Good luck.

What computer should I get for HD video editing?

I recently purchased Sony's HDR-HC1 high-definition camcorder, and I found out my current computer is way too slow for HD video editing. I want to purchase a brand new PC or Mac to get the job done (since my current PC is a 6-year-old 1Ghz Athlon dinosaur). Should I stay on PC platform, or should I switch to Mac? Either way, what is the spec of the computer I should get? I appreciate your sharing of your own experience!

What computer should I get for HD video editing?
Get A Mac! More Specifically, get a PowerMac G5! They are designed very well, inside and out. The processors in them are nice and the BUS SPEED is very high (half the speed of the processor). The 64 Bit structure is perfect for intense computing. Never seen the Quad in action, but several friends have, and they say it is unbelievably fast.

Apple Cinema Displays are kinda expensive, but they are WORTH IT!

Get dual displays if you can afford it!

Also, Final Cut Studio is like the best video editing software out there. It's very versitle, from SD to HD to Film, very stable, and each program in the suite interacts with each other very well.
Reply:Mac.

This thing was built for HD composition:

http://www.apple.com/powermac/
Reply:get an OSX with a with Final Cut Pro HD. you cant edit HD format without having the right format in your software. they sell special HD software these days. You cannot edit it in your normal DV format. Even if you do, you cannot take proper output. Get an external hard drive of atleast 80 GB. Helps a lot. And get the highest RAM speed. All these go a long way in helping you edit more efficiently.
Reply:a mac G5 would be your best bet... it has the largest hard drive and the most power to run an HD movie
Reply:I hate to join the fray on this but Mac is probably the way to go. I was looking at the pc specs on editing with premiere pro for editing HD and for full HD (I am assuming using something like the new Panasonic DVX200) you need a dual processor Xeon workstation.

That being the case, I really like final cut pro and for the amount of money for that type of computer, I think the dual 2.5 gig G5 is the way to go.

Pick up motion 2 and after effects and you will have some serious horsepower with that type of system.

Hope that helps,

Tony
Reply:Bin HD, Its not as good as proper 100Hz Crt sets, just compare the scanning rates.

Analogue rules, and no pixelation.
Reply:Buy a MAC, you will have nothing but trouble with a PC. Look at major motion pictures, they run off MAC platforms. Get a good G5 with a lot of memory and hard drive space, because your gonna need it. Also buy FINAL CUT PRO. Last, but you a HD editing deck so you dont wear out the heads on your video camera.
Reply:I hate Macs but I must say , the best computer to get for graphics is the MAC.

How do I stop pictures from photobucket downloading to my computer?

While my computer is on, I get random pictures from photobucket downloaded to my computer. I've tried deleting them from the file they are in, and it says it doesn't exist. I've done a full virus scan on my computer and it says there are no threats, but these pictures won't stop showing up. I have already deleted my account with photobucket too! Thanks for any advice you can give. This is really annoying!

How do I stop pictures from photobucket downloading to my computer?
Unless someone else gets on your comp and puts them there. It sounds like a virus to me, maybe your anti-virus software isn't picking it up on it's radar. Try a diff anti-virus program.

How do I stop my computer from powering off while I'm using it, save for a flashing orange light?

At random times (one crash happened while using iTunes, another while watching a video on Winamp, another while browsing text files from the Internet) my computer just powers off, with my tower continuing to flash on orange light on the power button. What can I do?

How do I stop my computer from powering off while I'm using it, save for a flashing orange light?
The usual causes for random shutdowns are:

1)Overheating triggers auto-shutdown to protect the CPU;

2)Memory module going bad;

3)Power supply going bad.
Reply:sounds like a conflict with some software or drivers installed. maybe too much running at once, shutting down is windows way of protecting it's self.
Reply:1) Sounds like there's a software glitch somewhere.

2) Or, are you power wires moving? You may have a loose wire somewhere. Check you power cord where it's plugged into the wall and where it's plugged into your computer.

3) If you're having power outages, you may need to invest in a good back-up power supply. I think they're called UPS.

How do I protect my computer speakers' cords from being chewed through by the cat?

I have a cat that for some reason won't seem to stop chewing through the computer cords. We already got a cord protecter to stop her from messing with the internet cord, but she can still mess with the speaker cords %26amp; there are visible bite marks. How do I stop her from chewing up the cord? We aren't going to get rid of the cat and kicking her *** won't help because I know she doesn't know any better. I'm thinking either wrap the cord with duct tape or cover it in hot sauce so she'll learn not to do it again. Any other ideas?

How do I protect my computer speakers' cords from being chewed through by the cat?
Hot sauce definately works unless you get a cat who actually likes it. One of mine does but luckily he never was a chewer. You can also try vinegar. One good thing that would work is to turn the ape on the cords so the sticky side faces out. Cats hate tape and this would definately keep the cat off. Good luck!
Reply:Try ChordSavers to protect your speaker cords and cables as well as protecting your cat. Report It

Reply:I believe the bitter apple from a pet store comes in a spray form. That would be less messy and smelly than the hot sauce.
Reply:The hot sauce trick works. Use a paintbrush to apply it.
Reply:squirt kitty with squirt gun/water when approaching the cords or majke very loud noise when kitty is chewing cords--EVERY time. my kitten does not go certain places in my boat because i made stereo loudest when kitty went there. works.
Reply:There is a product specifically for this problem called Bitter Apple. It is a liquid which you put on the cords and tastes awful to the cat. Most pet stores sell it.
Reply:tape your wires up to the celing, it worked with my cats.
Reply:Food stuff, like hot sauce, will get messy, smelly and sticky over time and can drip on carpets or desk or discolor thing they come in contact with. Duct tape, the same plus if you ever need to add or remove a cable think about all the sticky tape you have to try and unwrap. Not a good idea.

The best thing is to try and route the cables differently to try and expose less of the cable. Also, try searching on cable/cord covers or stop by a Radio Shack or home improvement store. They will have plenty of ideas and also carry wire and cord management products. A harder plastic covering may help your cat find the cable less 'tasty'!
Reply:I think you should keep your computer in another room away from your cat(s).
Reply:hot sauce didn't even work for my cats.

BUT.

office depot does have something called a Cable Organizer. it's heavy plastic and has a sticky back. you can put it up high, stick it to the wall.

at first i left it on the floor. but it didn't work so we stuck it to the wall!

and THEN brush with hot sauce...worked for me :)
Reply:Wrap the wires in a plastic tube. They sell ones made on purpose, but any tough round tube, cut on one side and big enough to hold in all your wires should do the job.

How do I get my computer to automatically start up upon supplying power?
You wont get it to turn on short of some type of remote switch. You can buy a remote control for your pc but it would entail inserting a pci card. Why cant you access the power button? Not being nosy but might be able to help.
Reply:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en%26amp;safe=...
Reply:it can not be done with out some kind of controllor how ever what you can do is go to radio shack or something buy a cheap 'push to MAKE' push button switch, break the front bezel off of the computer find the on switch, cut it off with some side cutters and get a load of wire probery get it in radio shack/maplin or failing that www.rapidonline.com and solder it to where you just cut the switch off, leave like a few meters so it pretudes from the caseing of the computer. then solder the switch to the two ends of the wires, simple and the best part is its remote, kinda

How does one block Internet access to a computer on a network?

The computer has to be able to use the network, but not have access to the Internet. The server environment is Windows 2000 server SP4, the computer could be running either Win 2000 or WinXP Pro. Most systems run with a dynamic IP address with specific machines set with a static IP for the particular job they are used for. Internet connection goes through a firewall appliance and then on to a router.

well if you are using a hard ware manged fire wall just block that pcs mac address in the fire wall and cut out all internet ports so it can not go out. easy way.

What is the best laptop computer to buy?

I am starting college in a couple months and I need to buy a new laptop computer; however, I am not sure which is the best to buy. I will need it to write reports and work on projects. I also plan to take a lot of multimedia and film studies classes that will require me to make and burn my own DVD's so it needs to be able to do that. I currently have a sony vaio but i need a better one for college. Please help, Thanks!

What is the best laptop computer to buy?
You will definitely need something with a bit of "kick" to it. If it were me I would be looking for something that at least 2Gb's of ram (preferably expandable to more), the biggest fastest hard drive I could find, something like a 100+ Gb 7200rpm SATA. A DVD-RW+- is a no brainer. I would MAKE SURE your video card does not share RAM, but has at least 128-256mb of it's own video ram. and you will need firewire. Then from there pick the fastest processor your budget will allow. I'm partial to AMD's but a mid-high range core duo should do you fine.

Other things to consider are things like battery life (the more cells the better), how heavy it is , built in wifi /bluetooth is pretty standard now but you'll want that, and if you can spring for it I would even consider something that has a built in webcam and TV tuner.

Reply:If you getting into films and movies....I'd get a Mac
Reply:Well this is kind of a loaded question...the best...go to Alienware/falcon Northwest or one of those guys that will supply you with one for a rather large sum...if you are looking for an update for the Vaio, just get a newer one...most laptops can be supplied with a DVD burner from the company that makes it, and most any reputable company will be fine.
Reply:no not one is better then others all has the same bits and piece's.
Reply:I've always preferred Toshiba for laptops!

But you may want to look into Mac's for multimedia. I've never owned one, so I cant say about those.
Reply:Dude! You're getting a Dell!!........that's what I have. And it is great.
Reply:Think about upgrading the one you have, more RAM, better graphics card, DVD burner and bigger(bigger the better, movies take a lot of space) hard drive , would work out cheaper and can be done quite easily.
Reply:With what you need to do definately go for an Apple MacBook but get the one with DVD burner. It is what i have and they are brilliant with a fantastic screen. They may be a little more expensie but they are worth every cent. Go try one at an Apple seller.
Reply:Hello:

Both DELL and Gateway have some pretty nice ones. You may end up needing a better model than the lower-end models, but both have good mid-priced models in the $700 to $800 US price range.

How many Minutes or hours is the advisable time for studying in front of computer?

We have installed so many learning components in computer and all this cannot be accessible by any other media. Printing of all the studying materials is also not a possible one. So we are placed in a situation to study in front of computer for certain important and upgraded things. How many minutes of hours is the advisable time for studying before computer? In my experience, things I have learned from printing materials mostly keep in my mind when compare to the computer learnings. Why its like that? Is there any memory difference arise when we study the same thing in computer and printing material?

How many Minutes or hours is the advisable time for studying in front of computer?
There is no time limit as to what advisable time is as research, new methods and our own capacity to perceive, adapt and apply new upgrades. Printing is more a technical repetitive procedure while computer learning is not in conditioned learning for those of us who who can already answer some easy computer questions. We are limited to respond to the new, quicker technologies and younger generations who now operate , devise and use computers.

How do I remove a domain from an old work computer?

I've been given an old notebook from work. Is there any way I can sever the default domain so I can get the computer set up as part of my home network, short of completely reinstalling XP? My own user account has administrator priviliges. When I try to add a new user account with a new domain it won't allow it.

Basically I just want to turn it into a home computer rather than a work computer without having to reinstall everything.

How do I remove a domain from an old work computer?
If you have administrator access, right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Computer Name tab, then the Change button. It should currently have the Domain radio button selected. Select the Workgroup radio button, give it a Workgroup name, then click OK all the way out. It will prompt for a restart. After that, you should be ready to go.
Reply:right click on the My Computer icon and select properties. Select the Computer Name tabe and then press the Change button. In the lower half of the box that pops up select the radio button next to Workgroup.

If by "my own user account" you mean you have an account on the current domain with administrator privileges, make sure you create a LOCAL account before you do this. If you remove the computer from the domain your "own user name" may not work, depending on how you have it set up.
Reply:You can only add domains if you have a domain sever for the domain connected. You need your works IT to use domain access to set up a local admin account on the machine for you, then on login select the machine instead of the domain.

What will happen if I dont plug the computer into alternator?

I bought a new 200 amp ford alternator for a nissan but it didnt come with an adapter so i cant plug the computer in until i get the plug. I have the main power plugged in and the ground but thats it. What will happen if the computer isnt plugged in?

What will happen if I dont plug the computer into alternator?
Well first, it should be a Nissan alternator, or an OEM or after market alternator ( call your local part store). Second, there is no adapter. Third you need the computer plugged in because the circuit will be open. Also the alternator will not charge the battery when the car is running so you will continuously get a dead battery.

Automotive techician- 7 years
Reply:The alternator will not put out. Those wires are for the field.
Reply:it'll come after you and kill you in your sleep
Reply:By computer, I am assuming you mean the voltage regulator. And the answer is no, it will NOT work, at least it will not work correctly The alternator works by a feedback circuit, as the alternator output voltage goes up, the excitement voltage goes down to prevent overcharge. Depending on the type pf feedback used in this particular vehicle, it will either NOT work at all or charge at the maximum rate Like I said, it will not work correctly.
Reply:I have a suspicion that the nissan alternator is regulated by the computer and The Ford one has an internal regulator. If that's the case there is an incompatability problem here that should be resolved before something really bad happens.
Reply:It probably won't run.

How do I get my computer to shut off automatically at a specific time?

I have caught my young son up very late at night multiple times using my desktop PC to chat, amongst other things. Since I can't shut my son off at midnight, I would like to shut the computer off automatically at midnight so I don't have to be up and maybe he will go to bed on time.

How do I get my computer to shut off automatically at a specific time?
Instead of turning off his computer why not just turn off the modem or router? If you have a router it is easy to unplug, then you can take it to your own bedroom when you go to bed = no more internet problems with your son.

With a bit of luck he'll be reading books in no time :)
Reply:I would not advise by that, as that can be more trouble then it is worth anc can cause problem and really screw up the computer. It would be best just for you to turn off the computer before you go to bed.

What type of motor is generally used to run a computer case fan?

Could anybody that deals with computers a lot tell me what type of motor is most popular for computer case fans?

I have seen DC brushless on a couple different computers, but I want to know if that is generally the case. Also, if you could give me a reason why a certain type of motor is used, that would be a bonus.

Thanks!

What type of motor is generally used to run a computer case fan?
DC brushless is the most common type used. It is quiet, and has no tendencies to produce noise signals that could interfere with the computer's operation.
Reply:In the 1980s and 1990s, PC cooling fans used a 2-phase motor because the area available for the motor in fan designs was larger and the cost of the control circuits was minimal. The first 1-phase fans were introduced in the late 1990s. The 1-phase motor is actually a 2-phase motor driven by a full bridge.

Can you spray paint a computer chair?

I have a very simple computer chair--not a fancy office chair or anything. I was was wondering if I could spray paint the black plastic frame of the chair with a gold metallic spray. I would cover the fabric so it doesn't get paint on it. Would the paint stick? Would it flake off? Do I need a primer? Thanks!

Can you spray paint a computer chair?
Plastic is a difficult thing to advise you on in regards to painting as there are many diff types and some will take paint and some wont.

I suggest you do a small trial on the underside of chair using a spirit (not enamel) based paint, be sure to thoroughly clean the surface with spirit based cleaner as this will soften the plastic and help paint to stick. there are also products that are designed to make paint stick to any surface. I suggest that your local specialty paint shop could help with these products.
Reply:Well you'd need a plastic primer and paint. The paint should be oil based
Reply:of course you can!

How do I get the pictures from my computer to my cameras memory card?

I have the usb cables and can transfer pictures from camera to computer but not computer to camera?

How do I get the pictures from my computer to my cameras memory card?
A SD card reader can fix your problems. You can get one at walmart for pretty cheap or you could search the web just type in SD Card Reader portable. A portable one is better because is small and you can take it anyway. Its almost like having an endless sized jump drive! LOL
Reply:Most cameras won't allow you to transfer files from computer to camera. To do this, you'll need a card reader. Attach the card reader to the computer, insert the memory card into the reader and access it from My Computer (Windows) or Finder (MAC OS). Then simply drag-n-drop the files into that memory card drive.

How can you transfer iPod songs from one computer to another?

I just got a new computer and I want to know how to transfer the songs from the old computer to the new one. Thanks.

How can you transfer iPod songs from one computer to another?
IF AND ONLY IF u paid for your stuff u can just download it again on any computer. however if this is not the case than the only way I know is to buy cds and transfer your music that way
Reply:Method 3 is probably best for your situation. Note: The following methods may not work for DRM protected music (i.e. music that came from the iTunes Music Store).

Transferring iTunes Music:

1.

To download specific songs you must download third party software (for free). You could download Senuti from http://www.download.com/3000-2182_4-1072...

2.

This method can only be used to transfer ALL songs from the iPod to the computer. It seems like a lot of steps but it will only take you a couple of minutes and you won't need third party software (and is especially convenient if you ever use a computer that is not online.)

%26gt;Connect iPod to computer.

%26gt;”Start.”

%26gt;”My Computer.”

%26gt;Double Click iPod icon.

%26gt;”Tools.”

%26gt;”Folder Options.”

%26gt;”View.”

%26gt;Select “Show Hidden Files %26amp; Folders” and click “OK.”

%26gt;Right click “iPod Control” folder.

%26gt;Select “Properties.”

%26gt;Unselect “Hidden” and click “OK.”

%26gt;A window will pop up. Select “Apply changes to this folder, subfolder and files” and click “OK.”

%26gt;Double click “iPod Control" folder.

%26gt;Double click “Music" folder.

%26gt;You will notice folders labeled “F00, F01, F02, F03, F04, etc.”

%26gt;Open up iTunes side by side with this window. Make sure that the “Music Library” is displayed.

%26gt;In iTunes select “Edit%26gt;Preferences%26gt;Advanced%26gt;and make sure that ‘Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized’ and ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library’ are checked and click ‘OK.’” You should also make sure that your iPod/iTunes is set to “Manually Manage Songs” so that you have control over what you want to add or delete (to do this select the iPod icon under “Devices” on the left column of the screen and select “Manually Manage Music” under “Options.”).

%26gt;Drag all of the yellow folders (not the Read Me files) directly into iTunes “Music Library.” I’m talking about the part that has song name, artist, track number, etc.

%26gt;You will notice a progress bar indicating that the music is being transferred. Sometimes a message will pop up saying that a song is not compatible with iTunes and that it needs to convert it. Just click “OK” when this message appears.

%26gt;Note: If you have slower computer you may want to only drag a few folders at a time so that your computer doesn’t freeze up.

3.

This method is best for getting music from one computer to another.

Use your iPod as an external hard drive (note: if you do this you won’t be able to listen to any of the songs through the iPod; this method is primarily for ease of transferring music). Locate the actual music folder which iTunes uses to display/play your songs.

%26gt;For most computers its going to be in “Start%26gt;My Music%26gt;iTunes%26gt;iTunes Music.”

%26gt;After you have located the music folders open up the iPod window by going to “Start%26gt;My Computer%26gt;iPod Icon.”

%26gt;Place the windows side by side and drag the music folder into the iPod window. Now you are using the iPod as external hard drive instead of an MP3 player. If you want you can even transfer word documents and photos as well.

%26gt;Once you get to the computer in which you want to transfer the music you simply open the iPod “Start%26gt;My Computer%26gt;iPod Icon” and drag the music folders into the iTunes Library interface (the largest part of the screen which displays song name, artist, track number, etc.). Now that music is on a new computer.

%26gt;Just make sure to delete those music folders in the iPod because they will be taking up valuable space. I would make sure the songs transfer successfully first though.

How can I regain a password from a computer that has only one account?

My pastor forgot his password on one of his computers. We can't go through. How can I get the old password or how can I make a new password? The computer has only one account -administrator account. Your help is greatly appreciated. God bless you.

How can I regain a password from a computer that has only one account?
You probably have nothing to worry about as long as you have your Windows XP CD!!

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (its assumed here that your XP CD is bootable as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be Press any key to boot from cd

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.

6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically you will see a progress bar stating Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of pressing any key to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.

12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After youve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

Hope It helps!
Reply:There is no simple, easy way to go about it. I would remove the hard drive and put it into another computer where I could run password cracking software on it.
Reply:turn it on, and tap F8 repeatedly, and wait. you should now be in something called safe mode, and it's about the same thing as normal Windows, except you can't load any drivers. Or, if you don't have any important files, and still have the CD for the operating system (windows), go to the command prompt in accessories, and type in deltree, which deletes EVERYTHING, and put in the CD and it will be like having a new computer.
Reply:There are a few methods to do this, but the easiest one is using 3rd party software that run *outside* Windows.

I think the best option is the first link I mentioned in my source list. Yes, it may take some blood, sweat and tears to get yourself through it, but in the end, I guess it's worth it.

And just for the record, I doubt that the warning on that site about EFS should be of any concern in this case.

If you want an easier approach, then you could try loginrecovery.com. You basically make a boot floppy (or a boot CD, but I'd rather not do that), boot the computer from that disk, and upload the files created on the floppy to loginrecovery.com. They'll give you your password in 72 hours.

If both fail to work, please look at the last link I mentioned.
Reply:http://www.wikihow.com/Log-on-to-Windows...
Reply:well the only way to do that is to reinstall windows. put in the windows cd turn off the pc then turn it back on then it will take you step by step from there. but the catch is you'll lose all previous memory
Reply:hmm.. wath bout deleting evry thing pc u getting password back but deletes all u got on pc like when it was new

when u turn of and on press f10 and then it starts deleting or something ;) god luck buddy
Reply:There are ways to get it, if you really need it
Reply:There are several programs you can use from a different computer, you go to their site and download it. What you do then is copy the file onto a cd, and bring it over to the password blocked computer.

Load the cd when the password screen comes up and then wait paitiently. If the file is working, the file will start finding EVERY single one of your passwords you've ever used on the computer from the login screen. (This excludes like form passwords, JUST your login screen)

For the files, I read it in a PC world magazine and can't remember exactly what their called. You can try searching about a program like that, but to be safe, I'd search in the PC world's site.

You could also format your computer. And try Cntrl + Alt + Delete during the login page to get a username and password. To some people, that usually sparks a memory.

Hope I help!

Can I somehow connect a computer to an a/v receiver via a composite or digital audio cable?

My receiver doesn't have a USB connection, and I want to play music from my computer through my surround sound speakers, which are all connected to the receiver. Receiver has both composite and digital audio input jacks. Any advice? Thank you.

Can I somehow connect a computer to an a/v receiver via a composite or digital audio cable?
Yes you can follow the above or you can also upgrade your sound card to one with a digital output or 5.1 - 7.1 outputs and use that instead.

As long as you have some sort of audio output you can connect it to an external stereo system.

If I were doing it I would opt for the new sound card with digital output
Reply:Yes you can connect the computer using a mini- stereo plug splitter on the PCs audio output connected to your receiver's audio input- the red and white RCA connectors.

You need this;

How difficult will it be to transfer the contents of my old computer's hard drive to my new computer?

Soon a will be upgrading my home desktop computer, possibly to a 'low end' laptop model. My old computer uses WindowsXP and the new one will use Vista most likely.

Is there an easy and efficient way to 'mirror' my old hard drive contents to my new computer? Or should I just leave this to a paid expert as I have done previously?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How difficult will it be to transfer the contents of my old computer's hard drive to my new computer?
Well, If you are going to have laptop other than home desktop PC. You will only have to copy whatever user data i.e. Pictures, Digital Audio Video Files etc.. those you can copy into a DATA CD, DVD, or USB Flashdisk then when your laptop is ready with your windows vista then you can copy into that. Most files XP files are compatible with VISTA. If you are not sure what you are doing then must hire paid expert rather than you loose your important data.
Reply:my dad does that

its called file transfer --google it

or slave your old harddrive on the new vista machine and copy the files you want
Reply:If you are just moving files and programmes then putting them on a USB drive or Pen driveis as good a way as any. Transfering the operating system would be another matter.
Reply:leave it to an expert. otherwise put your stuff on a pen drive and then put it on your new computer, if its to big put it in a compressed folder.
Reply:Can you burn it to CD/DVD???? Can be easy look on goole for full instructions

What is the program called that restores your computer to its original settings?

I have a Windows, Gateway computer that seemed to develop a little virus from a "movie download" off Limewire. I know I know, stupid. But anyways, I want to restore my computer to how it was when I first purchased it.

Thank you.

What is the program called that restores your computer to its original settings?
did you created a restore point?

if not i afraid there is no any software can really turn your pc to the point when you first purchased it! unless, you reinstall the OS
Reply:format your hardisc and reinstall your os.

i guarantee that your computer is back to original state.
Reply:no need to reformat..

download DEEP FREEZE.

it works!

clean your pc from worms and viruses.

install deep freeze

lock the system with a password

then restart.

the current system setting of your pc will restore whenever you restart.. that means, in case a virus came and installs anything in your pc..just restart... then the virus is gone..

this is very effective. my friend who owns a 20 unit internet cafe use this software. he doesnt have any antivirus installed in his units. all he has is this deep freeze.

the maintenance is very minimal.. he rarely formats his pc once a year..

here's the downside..

if your deep freeze is locked.. nothing new softwares installed will be set permanently.. example. if your deep freeze is locked, then you install a game.. after you restart.. the pc will go back to its locked state without the installed game.

unlock it first before you install anything.

same goes with your documents.

if your deepfreeze is locked.. then you make a simple powerpoint presentation and save it in your hard drive.

after you restart.. your saved file will be deleted.

be sure to make a backup / or save your documents in a flash disk..
Reply:hi paul, it is called buying a new one but lets fix this one. in other words no way hose but try start, programs, accessories and system tools go down to sytem restore if you know the date that you picked up the virus create it or hit it if the calender shows it to the day before you got your virus. then hit apply it will run it's scan at first then it will reboot itself and show that it is doing it's restore. when it is done it will reboot and it should have remove the virus then you should go back and defragment your harddrive (enteresting to watch) and clean disk and check every box except thumbnail regular maintance and it will ask you do you want to delete these files yes and that should remove your virus. if this don't do it format your harddrive and this will definitly remove that virus. if you cannot pc repairman can. hope i was helpful good luck my friend

How Can I get one computer to display six diferent video files on six different monitors?

Im trying to setup a display with 6 (six) different monitor outputs but using only one computer. I will be displaying 6 different video files i have created to run on windows media player (but i can change the format if i need to)

Is it possible to install 6 Video Cards onto one motherboard and have it recognize all 6 at the same time? If so How?

How Can I get one computer to display six diferent video files on six different monitors?
i guess you should be able to do that.

It will certainly be a tricky process. What is your budget? are you planning on using a computer you currently own, or making one?

They have the tri-sli boards out w\ 3 pci-express slots. you could maybe just have 3 pci-e cards w\ dual dvi/vga and be running 2 cards on each of them this way. I'm really not sure though, which is why i say it will be a little tricky.

How to get rid of everything on my computer and start completely fresh?

Ok, so my computers been bugging me lately. Got a lot of stuff I want to get rid of and a lot of changes I want undone. I've tried system restore but the farthest back restore point I have isn't good enough to undo the changes.

So how do I erase everything and get my computer to be like it was when I bought it. With just the software that comes with it and no settings or anything changed from the way they come as?

How to get rid of everything on my computer and start completely fresh?
The Windows CD (if it's 2000 or XP) will be bootable if it's legit. You want to do a fresh install and partition and then format the hard drive. This will get rid of pretty much everything that you need to be concerned about.

There are several things that you can do to be sure that you get your drivers back in after reinstalling Windows.

One, you can use something like Drivemax to back up your drivers. Even if you do, it would be a good idea to write down the device name from device manager (Control Panel%26gt;System%26gt;Hardware tab%26gt;Device Manager button).

Some people like to do it the old fashion way and have a boot diskette and run fdisk and format from the dos prompt. In this case, you can get a boot diskette image from:

Reply:yeah..re-install windows...that's what my dad does %26amp; if u need help call the windows people or someone who works for IBM.
Reply:You need to format the hard drive. Usually you need a boot disk or a windows CD to do it. If you have one of those, just pop it in and run the format, it's pretty self explanatory after that.

I need to reformat my computer. How to i save current programs and files before reformatting?
You will have to burn (copy) them to disk, or if you have a USB Port you can save them to an external drive.
Reply:The very, VERY best way is to drop a few dollars and just purchase a new Hard Drive and install your operating system on it thus eliminating the need to format, this way you know for a fact that everything is backud up ;)
Reply:The best advice I can give you is back up all your Important Data. Any programs you can reinstall then do so. Don't Copy the programs or anything like that. Also before you reformat please try this if you already haven't: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Reply:Do you partitions on your drive? If so save this on your partition drive like, D: data save all of this on D: partitions only and format only, C: System drive only at partition 1.

You could still recover files on D: since it was not included in formatting. Upon finishing your format, your D: will still be available automatically. It just detects your existing D: data files.

Reply:files that do not have virus can be saved in a portable hard disk. plz dont try n make any back up as this would nt compltly remove virus from your pc. songs and video files do nt contain virus so they can be saved in portable drives.

How do I turn off computer applications that are running in the backround?

I know there is a way. When my computer bogs down, someone told me it is because programs are running in the backround. He said there is a way to close them and make it run faster.

How do I turn off computer applications that are running in the backround?
1%26gt;right click on task bar(the bar at the bottom of your desktop)and go to task manager and end unnecessary processes!to know in detail about these processes go to my computer%26gt;control panel%26gt;performance and maintenance%26gt;services!!

2%26gt;%26gt;type msconfig in RUN and go to startup and disable all programs that start up with windows!
Reply:CTRL + ALT + DEL will bring you to the task manger. The task manager shows you all the programs and applications running. You should be able to close out all the programs without causing a problem by selecting "End Task". Be careful when shutting down processes because you can cause your windows to shut down.
Reply:Go to Window's Task Manager by pressing the keys Ctrl, Alt , and Delete simultaneouly . You will see the progammes that ar running in the background and you can choose the one's you wnt to delete and delete all the progammes also one by one.
Reply:this is sort of advanced. hit ctrl=alt=del at the same time.

from here you can look at processes running. dont start closing down stuff, for instance, never close explorer.exe or svhosts or lsass or winlogon or csrss or spool

be careful.

another way is to get spybot search and destroy or adaware
Reply:type msconfig in START---- RUN

it tells you what programs start there and you can select which ones you dont want starting.

If you want to remove them manually try CTRL+ALT+DEL

Also delete useless icons on the desktop.

How can I fix the computer with the black out screen eventhough the CPU and the screen are on?

I have exchange its hardrive with another computer but it didn't work, after several hours later it work. Then I return its original hardrive and it work but a few hours later it stop working again.

I have check it hardrive with another computer and found that it's working properly.

I have two computers and they are networking with each other. I have tried again this morning but it's still not working.

No proplem with the Screen and the Hardrive ( the computer works with two hardrive).

How can I fix the computer with the black out screen eventhough the CPU and the screen are on?
If both disk drives work well on one computer but sometimes don't on the other, you may have problems with bad cables, bad cable connection, or even motherboard failure.

Check your cables before attaching any HDD and check your HDDs jumper settings. If you can see them detected on the system bios they should be able to work. On the other hand, it's not recommended to exchange a system disk with another, specially with windows XP.

If your computer does boot, and starts windows XP but i doesn't load, you may need to enable VGA video: press F8 right after boot to load the start menu, go to safe mode or look for the "Enable VGA" option.

Good luck.

How can I gain access to a Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 computer if I forgot the administrator's password? How can I reset the administrator's password if I forgot it?

Ok, so you say you forgot your Windows administrator's password, huh? Oh well, it doesn't really matter if you did or you just say you did. The fact is that you need to gain access to a computer and you cannot "remember" the administrator's password.

Featured Product

Windows Key by LostPassword.com - Use this easy tool to reset any Windows local or domain controller password in a minute. Money-back guarantee. Download FREE version now!

How can you get out of this situation without formatting and re-installing the operating system?

One method of gaining access to the system is by trying hard to remember the forgotten password, or a password of another user which has the same level of administrative rights. However I don't think this approach will help you, otherwise you wouldn't be sitting here reading article, would you?)

Another method is by trying to restore a backed up System State (in Windows 2000/XP/2003) or a ERD (in NT 4.0) in which you do remember the password. The problem with doing so is that you'll probably lose all of the recently add users and groups, and all the changed passwords for all of your users since the last backup was made.

A third method might be to install a parallel operating system on a different partition on the same computer, then use a simple trick to gain access to the old system. Read more about it on my Forgot the Administrator's Password? - Alternate Logon Trick article.

Note: If you are looking for password cracking tools that can be used for miscellaneous objectives such as password-protected PDF documents, zipped archives, Office documents, BIOS protection and so on then this pages is NOT for you. See some links at the bottom of this page for hints on where to find such tools, but I can tell you right away that Google might be a better choice for you.

The fourth option is by using 3rd party tools that will enable you to reset the lost password and logon with a blank password.

Update: You can also discuss these topics on the dedicated Petri.co.il Forgot Admin Password Forum.

Free Tools

Here are some of these tools:

Free Windows password-cracking tools are usually Linux boot disks that have NT file system (NTFS) drivers and software that will read the registry and rewrite the password hashes for any account including the Administrators. This process requires physical access to the console and an available floppy drive but it works like a charm! I've done it myself several times with no glitch or problem whatsoever.

Beware!!! Resetting a user's or administrator's password on some systems (like Windows XP) might cause data loss, especially EFS-encrypted files and saved passwords from within Internet Explorer. To protect yourself against EFS-encrypted files loss you should always export your Private and Public key, along with the keys for the Recovery Agent user. Please read more about EFS on my What's EFS? page. Out of the following list, the only tool that will no cause any harm to EFS-encrypted files on your hard disk is the Windows Password recovery system.

Here are 5 of these free tools:

Windows Password recovery - Can retrieve forgotten admin and users' passwords in minutes. Safest possible option, does not write anything to hard drive.

Petter Nordahl-Hagen's Offline NT Password %26amp; Registry Editor - A great boot CD/Floppy that can reset the local administrator's password.

Openwall's John the Ripper - Good boot floppy with cracking capabilities.

EBCD – Emergency Boot CD - Bootable CD, intended for system recovery in the case of software or hardware faults.

If you happen to know about other free tools please let me know .

Important note for Windows Vista users: These tools do NOT work for Windows Vista. I will compile a page about Windows Vista later in the upcoming weeks. Do NOT attempt to use these tools in you have Windows Vista!

Note: These password resetting tools are usually good for local users on a stand alone computer. For Domain Admin password resetting procedures please see the Related Articles section at the bottom of this page.

Note: I'd like to put together all the info you have about these issues. If you have any tips, recommended links or any ideas about how to figure out a lost password - please e-mail me and I'll get back to you .

Windows Password recovery

http://www.loginrecovery.com

This site provides a tool to recover lost Windows XP passwords. It works for administrator and user accounts, it doesn't change the password just tells you the old one. It works with encrypted files (EFS) and password hashes. It even works if no passwords at all are known for the machine (as long as you have another computer with internet access to view this website with).

Author claims it also works with Windows NT and Windows Server 2003 and Windows Longhorn, but the BEST thing about it is the fact that it won't reset your passwords, but simply reveal them for you to remember and then use.

Give it a try. The author would like to receive feedback. There is a free service as well as a priority service that will retrieve your passwords within minutes. The fee for the priority service is very cheap, and is really just to cover server costs.

Note: You'll need a blank floppy to run the process.

Update: Author now offers the same tool as a CD image for those of you who do not have a floppy in their computer.

Usage, instructions and additional information can be found at

http://www.loginrecovery.com

Offline NT Password %26amp; Registry Editor (v060213 - February 2006)

Petter Nordahl-Hagen has written a Windows NT/2000/XP offline password editor:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd

This is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 system, by modifying the encrypted password in the registry's SAM file.

You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.

It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppy disk or CD. The boot-disk includes stuff to access NTFS partitions and scripts to glue the whole thing together.

Works with syskey (no need to turn it off, but you can if you have lost the key)

Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!

Caution: If used on users that have EFS encrypted files, and the system is XP or later service packs on W2K, all encrypted files for that user will be UNREADABLE! and cannot be recovered unless you remember the old password again!

Download links:

cd060213.zip (~3MB) - Bootable CD image with newer drivers

bd050303.zip (~1.1MB) - Bootdisk image, date 050303.

sc050303.zip(~1.4MB) - SCSI-drivers (050303) (only use newest drivers with newest bootdisk, this one works with bd050303)

To write these images to a floppy disk you'll need RawWrite2 which is included in the Bootdisk image download. To create the CD you just need to use your favorite CD burning program and burn the .ISO file to CD.

Support and Problems? Don't call me! Talk to the creator of this great tool. He also has a good FAQ set up covering most of the day-to-day questions. Read it right HERE

Author claims that this tool was successfully tested on NT 3.51, NT 4, Windows 2000 (except datacenter), Windows XP (all versions) and Window Server 2003. Notice that it is NOT compatible with Active Directory.

Need to change Windows NT/2000 Domain Admin password? This tool, however useful, will only reset the local administrator's password (e.g. the one found in the local computer's SAM). To reset a password of a domain administrator (or any other user for that matter) you must perform the routine that is described in the following page: Forgot the Administrator's Password? - Reset Domain Admin Password in Windows 2000 AD.

Note: The above trick will probably not work under Windows Server 2003 due to service account security changes. To work around these limitations please read the Forgot the Administrator's Password? - Reset Domain Admin Password in Windows Server 2003 AD page.

John the Ripper (v1.7.0.1)

John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different architectures), DOS, Win32, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. Besides several crypt(3) password hash types most commonly found on various Unix flavors, supported out of the box are Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP LM hashes, plus several more with contributed patches.

John the Ripper 1.7.0.1 (1.32mb)

A Pro version also exists on the author's site, however that one costs money.

EBCD – Emergency Boot CD (v0.61 - October 2004)

EBCD is a bootable CD, intended for system recovery in the case of software or hardware faults. It is able to create backup copies of normally working system and restore system to saved state. It contains the best system software ever created, properly compiled and configured for the maximum efficient use.

EBCD will be very useful when you need to:

Copy/move files (with long names, not necessary in CP437 encoding) from/to the disk but OS which can handle them (windows, Linux...) cannot boot. In particular, you may create a backup copy of normally installed and configured Windows and later restore Windows from such backup copy. So, in the case of fault OS itself and all software and its settings can be restored in 5-10 minutes.

Perform emergency boot of Windows NT / 2000 / XP. When the loader of this OS on the hard disk is damaged or misconfigured, you are able to load OS using another, standalone loader from this CD.

Recover master boot record of HDD. This allows to boot OS after incorrect uninstallation of custom loader (LILO, for example), which made all OS on your PC not bootable.

Delete, move, copy to file (image) and re-create partition from file. Image transfer over network is also supported: so you may configure one PC and then make contents of hard disks of other PCs same as contents of the hard disk of the first one.

Change password of any user, including administrator of Windows NT/2000/XP OS. You do not need to know the old password.

Recover deleted file, even file re-deleted from Windows Recycle Bin, and, in contrast, wipe single file or a whole disk so that it will be impossible to recover it in any way.

Recover data from accidentally formatted disk. Sometimes it helps to recover data from the disk, damaged by a virus.

Recover data from a floppy disk, which is not readable by OS. Format 3.5" disk for 1.7 Mb size.

Also the disk includes full set of external DOS commands, console versions of the most popular archivers/compressors.

Moreover, emergency boot CD includes minimal Linux distribution (Rescue Linux distribution) which may be very useful to a professional user.

I Forgot My Administrator Password!

by Vic Ferri

Can't Log On to Windows XP?

If that’s your only problem, then you probably have nothing to worry about. As long as you have your Windows XP CD, you can get back into your system using a simple but effective method made possible by a little known access hole in Windows XP.

This method is easy enough for newbies to follow – it doesn’t require using the Recovery Console or any complicated commands. And it’s free - I mention that because you can pay two hundred dollars for an emergency download of Winternals ERD with Locksmith which is a utility for unlocking lost Windows passwords. See here http://www.winternals.com/products/repai...

ERD is an excellent multi purpose product, but you should know it is not a necessary one if you have a healthy system and your sole problem is the inability to logon to Windows due to a forgotten password. Not necessary because you can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair. Here’s how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process included for newbie’s.

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”

(this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again!

After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

I tested the above on Windows XP Pro with and without SP1 and also used this method in a real situation where someone could not remember their password and it worked like a charm to fix the problem. This security hole allows access to more than just user accounts. You can also access the Registry and Policy Editor, for example. And its gui access with mouse control. Of course, a Product Key will be needed to continue with the Repair after making the changes, but for anyone intent on gaining access to your system, this would be no problem.

And in case you are wondering, NO, you cannot cancel install after making the changes and expect to logon with your new password.

Cancelling will just result in Setup resuming at bootup and your changes will be lost.

Ok, now that your logon problem is fixed, you should make a point to prevent it from ever happening again by creating a Password Reset Disk. This is a floppy disk you can use in the event you ever forget your log on password. It allows you to set a new password.

Here's how to create one if your computer is NOT on a domain:

Go to the Control Panel and open up User Accounts.

Choose your account (under Pick An Account to Change) and under Related Tasks, click "Prevent a forgotten password".

This will initiate a wizard.

Click Next and then insert a blank formatted floppy disk into your A: drive.

Click Next and enter your logon password in the password box.

Click Next to begin the creation of your Password disk.

Once completed, label and save the disk to a safe place

How to Log on to your PC Using Your Password Reset Disk

Start your computer and at the logon screen, click your user name and leave the password box blank or just type in anything. This will bring up a Logon Failure box and you will then see the option to use your Password Reset disk to create a new password. Click it which will initiate the Password Reset wizard. Insert your password reset disk into your floppy drive and follow the wizard which will let you choose a new password to use for your account.

Note: If your computer is part of a domain, the procedure for creating a password disk is different.
