How do I get rid of a computer virus without breaking the bank?

I believe I have a computer virus on my pc, but don't want to spend 200 bucks to get it fixed professionally. I can't use google to search for anything, random music plays sometimes, a bunch of popups open with every page I visit, and my computer is much slower than it used to be. I've already tried avg and a slew of other anti-spyware programs. What should I do?

How do I get rid of a computer virus without breaking the bank?
do a virus scan
Reply:You can take a backup of all your important data, format the disks and re-install everything.

Sure... It will improve the speed a lot. After re-installing everything, install a Firewall %26amp; Antivirus to prevent your computer from further attacks.
Reply:Spybot search and destroy

Has a download for a free version of the VGA anti-spyware
Reply:For considerably less, maybe around $50.00, you can download Norton or Symantec antivirus software that will scan your pc and detect any virus, and quarantine it so it can do no further harm to your computer.

Spyware and viruses are not quite the same. Spyware is not malicious, it just tracks your computer usage and websites visited for commercial purposes. Viruses, on the other hand, are malicious and destructive. But as far as your computer speed and performance is concerned, the more TSR(Terminate and Stay Resident) programs you have running on your computer, the slower it will run. These TSRs are courtesy of myriad Internet vendors that couldn't care less about your computer performance, they are desperate just to get their digital clutches into your Internet interface. It is a fact of life that Internet vendors, Yahoo included, will want to download software that stays resident in memory, thereby sapping your memory resources.

I would be happy to go into a rant about how invasive this is to what, after all, is YOUR computer system and who ARE these people to muck it up? Having been around the block a few times with this situation, it would seem to me to be a situation of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" because Microsoft, if nothing else, will want to keep dowloading "fixes" and whatever to slow your system down. These "fixes" are probably necessary.

You can buy more MEMORY for your computer if it isn't maxed out already. That is one surefire way to make your computer run faster. You can also press ctrl+alt+delete and bring up your Task Manager program to see what's running in memory. Take each process that's running, cut and paste its name into your searchbar, and find out what this program is actually doing. You might find you can eliminate that program from your startup sequence. If you do not have the computer knowledge on how to do that, further Internet research will perhaps show you the steps. Good luck.

One last note: The irony of spyware is almost Orwellian. Yahoo will happily download its antispy ware onto your computer. Look at the licensing agreement very carefully. It states that by downloading this software, you agree to have Yahoo install its own spyware on to your system. See what I mean? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
Reply:if u dont have a patients to clean virus then formate your system

Go to trendmicro.com and click on housecall. It will scan your computer in realtime for free and let you know if you have any crap (virus) in your computer. Don't waste time downloading a bunch of 3rd part spyware removers. The yahoo! toolbar has a spyware cleaner. Its simple and it gets the job done. Those 2 things are all you need.

If it all fails. Burn a copy of your essential files and reformat your hard drive.
Reply:Udate your firewall and scan your coputer in safe mode. After you remove virus trojan, I recommend you use firefox browser. It can prevent viruses such as worm, trojan and etc.The newest official edition of firefox can be downloaded from http://www.mollzia.com
Reply:You can download some best antivirus

programmes like Norton, Avg at http://www.fixit.in/antivirus.html
Reply:Run both of these on-line scans. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install your current protections before using these.

1. Scan for virus, worms, dialers, etc. and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with BitDefender's Online Scanner

http://www.bitdefender.com/

2. Scan for trojans, adware, and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus.

These scans will take quite a bit of time. The time is necessary to clean-up an infected computer.

Good luck.
