How do I stop many programs from running everytime I start up my computer?

I may have lots of stuff running everytime I turn on my computer and I think it is slowing my computer down. How do I get into the area where I can turn off some of these unneccesary programs? The cable guy showed me how on the down stairs computer which has a Windows XP, but my computer upstairs has a Windows Professional 2000 and the same steps he showed me did not work on my computer. Simply using Ctl, Alt, Delete is not what Im talking about. Do you think its affecting my virtual memory since I seem to never have enough even though sometimes Im not running any programs except for a few web pages open?

open the programs that are running - check in the Tools/Options section and uncheck the run on startup and click apply (if applicable)


this should disable the start up feature next time you turn your computer on





another way to disable them is to click on Start (lower left corner of your monitor) - Run


then a small window pops up - type in msconfig - click OK


this will bring up another window called - System Configuration Utilities - in here you will see about 6 tabs


look under the Start up tab


uncheck the programs you don't want starting up


you may need to restart your computer


once it's restarted those programs won't start up that you unchecked


make sure you don't uncheck a program that is needed for startup

Reply:On the program, look for an Options or Settings. Then from there look for an option that says "Start program on Windows start-up" or sumtin along those lines, and unchek the box, or deselect it, then the next time you start-up your pc, it won't do that.

Reply:start run type in msconfig when the window pops up click on start up and uncheck what ever you don't want running in the background during start up also when you download new programs make sure you read it adn do not check run at start up.

Reply:You probably mean the msconfig program. This program didn't come with windows 2000. However the windows xp version works just fine.

And place it in c:\winnt\system32





You can now use it in the same way you use it on windows xp by going to start / Run then typing msconfig.

Reply:Its effecting everything, RAM, processor, virtual memory, FSB, etc.. go to run in the start menu and type msconfig and hit enter. Startup tab is where you want to be.
Reply:Click Start, Run, and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) in the dialog box that appears. In the new window that shows up (the System Configuration Utility), go to the Startup tab, and uncheck as many programs as you want. However, make sure you do not disable essential components. For example, if you run a NetGear wireless network card, do not disable the program that allows you to access the Internet!





After unchecking as many programs as you wish, hit OK, and you will be prompted to restart your computer. If you find that you did uncheck something important, simply run msconfig again, recheck the box, and restart your computer again.





Optionally, you can download the program CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and use its built-in Startup Manager tool. It, unlike the SCU, deletes the startup entries permanently, rather than just toggling them off. This, however, is not recommended until you know what each program does. Another strong point of CCleaner is that it gives you more detail into what each Startup Item is. CCleaner is also just a generally nifty program to have, as it cleans out many of Windows caches of temporary and system-bogging files.
